Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 65

This trip was a wonderful experience for our children.  Our day began with the bus ride to the venue.  For many of the children this was their first bus ride! Their excitement was contagious.  Upon arrival we split into 3 groups.  The first group learned all about plants that are native to Florida, specifically South Florida.  The children were mesmerized by the giant banyan tree and loved touching the aloe plants.  The second group explored native Florida birds.  Our favorite was the flamingo.  We learned that they get their color from eating a certain shrimp that eats a pinkish color algae.  Our most favorite group was the alligators!   There were over 10 alligators, this was so exciting for our children to see.  It was the BEST day! Thankyou so much for supporting our learning, we are truly grateful!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

We hope to support our leaning goal of observing plants and animals and describing how they are alike and different.

What will be done with my students

The Wonder Gardens is home to a diverse family of rescued, rehabilitated and non-releasable Florida Alligators and Flamingos to beautiful macaws, pythons, turtles, tortoises and even Chinese Golden Pheasants. The students will be exposed to natural Florida plants and wildlife. They will learn about local animals and be able to study their diets, habitats and behaviors. Students will also be able to feed many of the animals, including Alligators and Flamingos.

Benefits to my students

The students will be able to make real world connections with our learning goal and Florida plants and animals in their natural state. These standards based programs use the C-Palms Science and Exploration. This tour is supported with a trained educator on staff at the wondergardens.
