Our goal is to deepen grades K-5 students mental understanding of the science of forces and changes in motion while improving their physical well-being by applying authentic fun filled physical education scooter activities.
A. It takes energy to change the motion of objects.

B. Energy change is understood in terms of forces--pushes or pulls.

C. Some forces act through physical contact.
D. Play K-5 students’ favorite piece of equipment scooter games that incorporate cross-content connections.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 880

Students were able to learn about force, push and pull during a full class activity integrating science to PE. They also received a unique oppurunity to use the new scooters during literacy week to race on them and form words and learn their vowels, abc's etc. They absolutely LOVED the new scooters and are so thankful for this grant as am I.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

A. It takes energy to change the motion of objects.

D. Play K-5 students’ favorite piece of equipment scooter games that incorporate cross-content connections.

What will be done with my students

Students will use their muscles to discover pushes and pulls are forces we use to move ourselves and objects too! Students will be able to demonstrate and tell the difference between the two and how to easily identify them!
Investigate the effect of applying various pushes and pulls on different objects.
Demonstrate that the way to change the motion of an object is by applying a push or a pull.
Demonstrate that the greater the force (push or pull) applied to an object, the greater the change in motion of the object.
All scooter push pull activities are connected to Collier County K-5 Physical Science & Physical Education Standards. Activities are ready to be implemented immediately; played each quarter as well as used during schoolwide field day, and additionally will support all grade K-5 science teachers push pull lessons during the school year. Basketball on Scooters The rules are the same as in flicker ball, but the goal is a 50-gallon plastic located in the center of a circle with a 5’ radius. No player may enter that circle. Two points are scored for every basket. The opposing team gets the ball after each score. Apply addition & subtraction score keepers
1. Pre-Game Warm-up (pose mental & physical push-pull questions)
Push/ Pull Crab Claw Relays. Forward then backward Crab Walk (seated with hands on scooter) using quadriceps then hamstrings to discover push pull muscle action needed to move oneself and or an object.
Beach Day Push Pull Swim Play! Push Up Position (hands off scooter); Swim Across (on belly);
i.e., forward front stroke vs back stroke
Discuss and apply all water safety standards per grade level.
2. Cooperative Team Game(s):
“Space Jam” all scooters evenly in a square-shaped formation. Scoot in a forward direction across the square without touching other scooters as you pass them. Warm up: North crosses to south, then south crosses over to north. East crosses to west, then west crosses to east. Now east/west cross simultaneously, then north/south together. Finally, N, E, W, S all cross at the same time. Explain rules of driving your spaceship i.e., right of way, speeding, one way, courtesy, passing on the right or left, etc. Have 4 students use observation skills (Ticket Masters) issue tickets for poor driving. Poor spaceship drivers go to Traffic back to earth for rehabilitation (one minute reading zone review Newton’s Laws of motion and courtesy rules to look at). Cooperative twist: High fives, low fives, high tens, swing your partner, dos a do, etc. as scooters cross. Timed Traffic Jam: With everyone crossing from all four sides at once, what is the quickest time for everyone to get to their opposite side. For the next games, line up (on scooters) according to height, birthday/age, scooter color, boy-girl-boy-girl, or alphabetical.
3. Crab Tag Game:
Push Pull Away Crab Tag. All fleeing scooters line up on “east” side of playing area. One chaser scooter (“it”) starts on the opposite (“west”) side. At signal, fleeing scooters must get to the west side, avoiding the chaser scooter who attempts to tag them with water safety noodle. Any fleeing scooter tagged by the chaser becomes a chaser. New chasers join prior chasers on the east side. Untagged scooters are now on the west side. At signal, fleeing scooters attempt to get back to the east side without being tagged. Continue east-west.
4. Scooter Score Basketball Game:
Basketball on Scooters: The rules are the same as in flicker ball, but the goal is a 50-gallon plastic bin located in the center of a circle with a 5’ radius. No player may enter that circle. Two points are scored for every basket. The opposing team gets the ball after each score. Play traditional rules while on scooter place bins on both ends or even four sides of the court.
5. Nutritious Treasure Game:
Nutrition/ Treasure Hunt on Scooters Teams of 4-6 players. One scooter board for each team. To start the game, the first person in line scoots to their treasure pile on the opposite side of the playing area and selects one piece of treasure to carry back to their team’s treasure chest. Teams attempt to fill their “treasure chest” (a box or milk crate) with “buried treasure” (health food, coins, bean bags, deck tennis rings, tennis balls, relay batons, poly spots, etc.) taken from the opposite side of the playing area. When one team’s buried treasure pile is empty, they may “pirate” treasure from another team’s buried treasure piles until all the buried treasure is gone. The object of the game is for each team to fill its chest with the most treasure. This game may also be played to help students apply the concepts of reading and money math. Teams are given a money math word problem to solve. Students must “work” to use their push & pull muscles to travel to the buried treasure to gather dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies, and appropriate $ & C symbols appropriately that indicate the correct answer to the word problem.

Benefits to my students

This type of authentic physical & mental cross-curricular teaching, is our way of creating physical education lessons / instruction that intentionally applies multiple academic disciplines simultaneously, is an effective way to teach students transferable problem solving skills, give real-world meaning to school assignments, and increase engagement and rigor in an active setting.

Budget Narrative

We are requesting $519.96 to help all students actively engage in hands on physical & mental creative cross-content play that incorporate individual math, reading, vocabulary, and team build cooperative skills.
