My goal for incorporating STEM education into my classroom is to increase STEM literacy—defined as the knowledge and understanding of scientific and mathematical concepts and processes required for personal decision making, participation in civic and cultural affairs, and economic productivity for all students. This grant will help my entire 4th grade team incorporate STEAM into our various reading, writing, science and math units throughout the year.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 39

This grant has been such a blessing to my classroom this year. Having two classes that I teach for math and science leads to higher costs in materials for STEAM projects. This grant has helped replenish previous stock so that I can now continue to do those projects in the future. It has also given my class the opportunity to do additional STEAM projects this year. These projects have added to our units that tie to reading, math, and science lessons. Some projects we have done include parachutes, penny towers, elf traps with the kinder classrooms, and catapults. This grant will continue to fund projects at the end of this year and into next year as I continue to plan STEAM projects that relate to our units.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal for incorporating STEM education into my classroom is to increase STEM literacy—defined as the knowledge and understanding of scientific and mathematical concepts and processes required for personal decision making, participation in civic and cultural affairs, and economic productivity for all students. This grant will help my entire 4th grade team incorporate STEAM into our various reading, writing, science and math units throughout the year.

What will be done with my students

The ability to think critically and challenge standards is the basis of innovation and I challenge myself each year by focusing on how I can incorporate STEAM into my reading and writing curriculum. From designing parachutes during our writing boot camp, to creating abstract stain glass art inspired by Martin Luther King Jr, to building arcade games out of cardboard for our last day of school celebration-- STEAM is integral to reading and writing classroom.

Benefits to my students

STEM-based education teaches children more than science and mathematics concepts. The focus on hands-on learning with real-world applications helps develop a variety of skill sets, including creativity and 21st-century skills. These skills include media and technology literacy, productivity, social skills, communication, flexibility and initiative. Other skills attained through STEM education include problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, curiosity, decision making, leadership, entrepreneurship, acceptance of failure and more. Regardless of the future career path considered by these children, these skill sets go a long way to preparing them to be innovative.

Budget Narrative

STEAM projects can be costly due to the replacement of supplies such as those listed above. These supplies will be used by our 4th grade team repeatedly throughout the year for various projects we have planned on completing.
