Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 284

HCE leaders are definitely 'Otter' this world! Thank you so much for funding this grant helping to motivate and celebrate these leaders, and in turn these leaders inspiring other students. The brag sticks were a hit with the students as they sought to collect more and proudly display them on their back packs. With a school of 284 students, we were able to start everyone with a Herbert Cambridge Elementary customized 'Otter This World' tag. The Ambassador student club enjoyed putting these brag sticks on a special cable ring and delivering them to each classroom in the building. The Ambassadors then created welcome bags for new students, which included the customized brag stick to add to their back pack. This gift welcomed them to the HCE family and started their journey of adding additional brag sticks by displaying hard work, kindness and leadership qualities. At this point in the year, 397 positive referrals have been recognized and and over 200 Leaders of the month celebrated. With each recognition another brag sick is added to a student's ring on their back pack. As the back pack is carried from school to home it creates a wonderful opportunity for students to share with both their parents and other students the leadership qualities that helped them earn the new brag stick. The buy in from the students has been tremendous as they hold me accountable for reading the positive referrals on the news and delivering them in a timely manner. Many students have also stepped up to recommend other students to be recognized with a positive referral, they have also asked about recognizing teachers and staff with positive referrals. Thank you again for funding this project, please know that it has made such a positive difference with the students at Herbert Cambridge Elementary!

Customized Herbert Cambridge Elementary Brag Stick

Original Grant Overview

Goal

At Herbert Cambridge Elementary we strive to grow leaders, learners, and responsible citizens. Through this project we will recognize the students who display these qualities and inspire them in others, ultimately creating a school community in which each child feels safe, respected, celebrated, and loved.

What will be done with my students

As a part of the Herbert Cambridge Elementary positive behavior plan we will recognize our students' positive behaviors and character, by announcing them on the morning news with 'Positive Referrals'.
Each student who is recognized with a positive referral will receive a certificate to share with parents, have their picture displayed at school and receive an 'Otter This World' brag stick. Students can proudly display these brag sticks on a backpack, belt loop, or anything that they can connect to. The first brag stick that students will receive is customized with the Herbert Cambridge Elementary School theme and mascot, which will help build a sense of community. As they continue to earn positive referrals they can collect different brag stick designs. In addition, students who are recognized as Leaders of the Month will also be announced on the news, have their picture displayed and receive an 'I am a Leader' brag stick to display. Other incentives, such as reading, math or attendance may also be added and displayed on the brag stick holder.

Benefits to my students

This project will benefit the Herbert Cambridge Elementary students by inspiring, motivating, and recognizing positive behaviors, attitudes and hard work. During a recent survey, Herbert Cambridge Elementary students reported that the recognition of Positive Referrals and Leader of the Month were the top 2 incentives to motivate and reinforce their positive behaviors. These incentives not only reinforce students who receive the recognition, but the announcements on the news, displayed pictures and brag sticks displayed on backpacks serve as a reminder and a motivation for other students to make positive choices.
