Students will work on kindness projects throughout the year to promote a more positive environment with words and actions at school, home and in the community. Students will improve reading and speaking skills as they practice reading kindness books first with a reading resource teacher, then to younger students at our school. Activities throughout the year will promote stronger leadership skills. Improved attendance will be another result of the positive environment the students create.

This has been such a wonderful year with my second grade atudent action group, Kids for Kindness!  We have viited several kinderagreten rooms to read these beautiful kindness books I was able to purchase.  My second graders worked so hard to practicing so they could read these books.  the kindergarten students loved them!  My students were filled with pride and learned to be real leaders!  Thank you so much.  We also shared kindness pencils and bookmarks with other grade levels1  Kindness is here at Pinecrest and thanks to you it is spreading through literacy!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will work on kindness projects throughout the year to promote a more positive environment with words and actions at school, home and in the community. Students will improve reading and speaking skills as they practice reading kindness books first with a reading resource teacher, then to younger students at our school. Activities throughout the year will promote stronger leadership skills. Improved attendance will be another result of the positive environment the students create.

What will be done with my students

I will meet with my second grade Student Leadership group, Kids for Kindness, once a month. Activities are planned throughout the year to spread kindness throughout their school, home and community.

1.Students will practice reading kindness books from our Kindness Book Basket with each other. Once they are confident with their reading they will be paired up with a student in first grade and kindergarten to read and discuss these books with.

2. Students will engage in discussions and planning to make kindness posters for Kindness month to display in the school hallway.

3. Students will make kindness bookmarks to share with our intermediate students along with giving each student an inspirational pencil.

4. Students will work together to create kindness booklets to share with their families.

5. Students will create cards for community service members to display gratitude for their service.

Benefits to my students

This group activity will foster kindness at our school, in their homes and in the community. Students will improve reading and language skills as they practice reading the books and discussing them. I will be able to work on all four strands: foundations, reading, communication and vocabulary. I am a reading resource teacher and will pull in my knowledge and skills related to the ELA benchmarks as students practice these skills. The students will also benefit from being a part of developing a positive environment which will help to improve our attendance. Creating an inviting environment improves attendance. Students will also have the opportunities to be leaders which is a huge part of our school.
