21st Century French Learners 2.0

Activity # 1

The goal was to incorporate Vista Higher learning platform (VHL) with the Best Practice of Comprehensible Input (CI) to help French students to become more efficient communicators “by encouraging them to engage in meaningful, everyday scenarios in the target language to build their communication skills.” Students were engaged with authentic, everyday phrases and situations, to help them understand French and to produce phrases after they have spent an amount of time being an active and engage listener.

Learning the language of French is based on four components: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. The School District utilize both VHL and MIDTAP by Manley, Horizons, 7th edition two wonderful platform for students to learn the four components.

The classroom was divided in four centers: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking with the framework of “Language Acquisition” to encourage natural communication.”  Students worked in groups to “WL.K12.NM.1.2: Demonstrate understanding of everyday expressions dealing with simple and concrete daily activities and needs, presented in a clear, slow, and repeated speech.” and to  WL.K12.IH.4.6: Formulate and deliver a presentation on an assigned topic using multimedia resources to support the presentation.”

Reading/Writing Center: Students read and write simple articles in French. Students produced the vocabulary words needed to write stories based on their links and interests. Students drew pictures to elaborate on the stories.

Speaking/Listening Center: Students was able to listen to native speakers and read articles to “Demonstrate understanding of everyday expressions dealing with simple and concrete daily activities…” Students was able to read along with the native speakers which is a great way to produce “input” by listening to “stories, hearing everyday speech, and listening to conversations with a native speaker. “Students completed listening activities from VHL based on similar themes as the article to reinforce the concepts.

During the Speaking Session students produced sentences on their own in addition to selected activities from VHL an assigned topic” with similar themes and conversing with their peers in the classroom to create a more interactive conversation with familiar vocabulary words, which is “An example of “output”.

Students participated in a conversation and respond to what the other person says in the classroom and on the VHL platform. Students was encouraged to carefully listen to the conversation to answer or record the appropriate response. IPAD was utilized as a multimedia resource to support that presentation. By implementing the strategies listed, students were able to achieve the goal of becoming more efficient in communicating in French.

The iPads and CI were critical for the students becoming more efficient in acquiring French with meaningful interaction with peers and or the VHL platform. The iPads assured that when the students come to class, they had all the resources that they needed to succeed in all the learning Centers.

VHL is an effective platform to learn French, the iPads assured that when the students come to class, they had all the resources that they needed to succeed in all the learning Centers.

Additionally, the students had the opportunity to use the iPads to conduct research for their Francophone Countries project, which serve as a vehicle for students to travel the world, gain cultural knowledge, and leave an impact.

  • French 1 Students
    • Research an assigned Francophone country based on 13 questions that were provided plus the presentation.
    • Explored with peers some of the monuments through Google Expeditions: Virtual Reality for classroom with Virtual Reality Smartphone Headset.
    •
    • French 2 Strudents
      • Generated six questions and six possible answered to conduct an interview with the president of the (assign) country.
      • During the presentation, the students presented a summary of the interview.
      • Video clip or a YouTube clip to demonstrate.

I sincerely thank All Of You Donors for allowing teachers such as myself the possibility to dream BIG for our students by receiving the necessary resources and materials to provide impactful services with positive changes.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to incorporate a program called Vista Higher learning platform (VHL) and comprehensible Input (CI) Strategy to help my French students to become more efficient in learning the Listening and Speaking components for learning French. My goal is to "Start making the classroom more about communication and the students and less about the language itself" by implementing CI strategy with effective resources.

What will be done with my students

Students will use the VHL program to assist them with the speaking and listening aspect of the program. With the use of iPads, the students will be work in groups to “WL.K12.NM.1.2: Demonstrate understanding of everyday expressions dealing with simple and concrete daily activities and needs presented in a clear, slow, and repeated speech.” Additionally,

“Speaking: WL.K12.IH.4.6: Formulate and deliver a presentation on an assigned topic using multimedia resources to support the presentation.”

The goal is to prepare students to be to listen and to speak in French. The classroom will be divided in four centers: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.

Reading Center: Students will be reading simple articles in French. The strategy of Know, want to Know, want Learn (KWL) chart will be used to allow students identify the vocabulary words that they already, the words that they want to know more about, and what they would like to learn about the article. I will go over the new vocabulary words with the students and I will have them repeat the words after me for better pronunciation.

Writing Center: The writing center is a continuity of the Reading Center. Students will have the opportunity to explain why they want to know more about the vocabulary they had written in their KWL chart. Students can write or draw pictures to justify their answers.

Listening Center: Students will be able to use the IPAD to listen to native speakers read the article in order to “Demonstrate understanding of everyday expressions dealing with simple and concrete daily activities…” Students will be able to read along with the native speakers. Students will be able to practice their listening skills in order to learn how to present information in a “clear, slow, and repeated speech”. For more interacting and engaging tasks, I will have students complete listening activities from VHL based on the same theme as the article to reinforce the skills.

Speaking Center: I will select activities from VHL “on an assigned topic” based on the same theme as the article in order for students to have an interactive conversation with familiar vocabulary words. I will have students participate in a conversation and respond to what the other person says on the VHL platform. I will encourage students to carefully listen to the conversation in order to record the appropriate answer. I will use the IPAD as a multimedia resource to support that presentation. By implementing the strategies listed, students will be able to achieve the goal of becoming more efficient in learning the Listening and Speaking components for learning French.

The iPads are critical for the students to becoming more efficient in learning the Listening and Speaking components for learning French. Learning the language of French is based on four components: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. The School District had chosen VHL a wonderful platform for students to learn the four components. VHL is an effective platform to learn French, the iPads will assure that when the students come to class they will have all the resources that they need to succeed in all the learning Centers.

The goal is to provide 5 iPads to 5 students in order to access Vista Higher Learning (VHL) platform more efficiently to learn the Listening and the Speaking components for learning French.

Students had also received an individual laptop from the School District. Unfortunately, students tend to have difficulty having their laptops with them at all. A classroom set of 5 iPads would allow those students to access and navigate VHL and continue their learning process without any interruption.

Benefits to my students

The ability to learn French effectively by accessing VHL platform is a must to master the Speaking and the Listening components of the language. Having a classroom set of 5 iPads would tremendously improve the learning process. Students will be able to complete tasks such as Interpersonal Speaking/Listening: Conversation to which they have to interact with a Live Online scenario build in VHL platform to promote engagement and relatable conversation. Students will learn how to:

1. Understand a conversational format
2. Participate in a conversation
3. Preview the conversation before responding
4. Respond to what the other person says
5. Record their part in each conversational exchange and in addition to the Reading and Writing Centers.
6. Students actively engaged
7. Students taking ownership of their learning
