Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 125

Thanks to the donation of the vertical whiteboard surfaces my students were able to express their ideas and collaborate with their peers in an enganging manner. I noticed an increase in creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, as well as student participation and engagement.

In addition, I was able to easily assess students' understanding of a topic and provide real-time feedback. This lead to more targeted and effective instruction, which improved student learning outcomes. The addition of theses vertical surfaces heped my students develop the skills they need to succeed in math during this academic year and beyond.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to encourage my students to engage in deeper mathematical thinking through individual and collective learning.

What will be done with my students

My students are creative and resourceful individuals who can be hesitant to try new things in math class. My favorite teaching moments in the classroom center around group activities in which the students are collaborating with each other, and participating in math conversations.
I would love to implement Peter Liljedahl’s “Building Thinking Classrooms” strategy. The book considers the benefits of having "vertical surfaces" to implement "thinking classrooms" in mathematics instruction. Vertical surfaces, like whiteboards, are used for students to collaborate, demonstrate their thinking process, and solve math problems during class. The impermanent nature of the white boards helps eliminate the stress of making mistakes and build confidence. Once the groups have solved their math problems, the class participates in math conversations in which they summarize their learning experiences. The activity is finalized by students taking their own notes from the work completed on the white boards.

Benefits to my students

Some of the benefits to my students are deeper learning, and higher levels of engagement and confidence.
In addition, the use of frequent and visibly random groupings breaks down social barriers, increases knowledge mobility, lowers stress levels, and improves interest in mathematics.
