Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 270

9 Square has been a great addition to our PE equipment. Using 9 square has allowed us to hit different lesson standards in our curriculum in which students have to throw and catch objects of different shapes and sizes in various settings while standing still and also moving. It is a fun and active game that can be used at a lower height with kindergarteners who are just learning to throw and catch, to the 5th graders who are using it at higher height and are more active. The 5th graders are also able to use the 9 square as an introduction to Volleyball, where they are learning to “set” the ball above their head and start to learn correct technique so they are ready for volleyball as a 6th grader. The kids always get excited now when they see the 9 square equipment set up and ready for them to use as they walk up to the pavilion for PE class. Thank you again!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To support our students in an active and fun way of introducing striking, throwing, and catching objects to support volleyball skills as well as other activities that use the same movements.

What will be done with my students

9 Square is an active game that is played like 4 square, but up in the air. Nine students are playing at once, while trying to keep a ball up in the air and not allowing it to fall in their square or hit it out of bounds. Students are able to use different types of balls, while also raising the height of the equipment to strike, catch, and throw to another square, increasing or decreasing the difficulty based on the abilities of each age group.

Benefits to my students

9 square is a great way to help our younger students begin to strike and catch a ball using the proper movements to be successful, while also throwing to others and using the idea of teamwork and sharing. These ideas are also used with the older students, while also focusing in on more specific skills that prepare them for volleyball in middle school and making the game more fast paced and exciting. The 9 Square equipment will allow more students to be playing at once, which will help them have more time to practice their skills based on their particular level.
