Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 120

Students are loving the variety of genres that the Sunshine State Young Readers offer.  In addition to competing with each other to complete them all, the students are having discussions/debates about which book is the best and why.  Having two sets allows for more students to be reading at the same time; without having to wait for others to finish.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Obtaining two sets of SSYRA books for the 5 ELA classes that I teach that will allow more students to be able to read them and challenge themselves to read all 15 books.

What will be done with my students

Each year the state of Florida releases the titles of 15 books that have earned the SSYRA award. I would like to have 2 sets of the books in my classroom for all students to have access to the different genres. Reading different genres allow students to deepen their knowledge and grow as a reader. Students will have the opportunity to read books individually, but also have the opportunity to share the experiences and opinions with their peers.

Benefits to my students

Research shows that there are benefits to reading: expands their vocabulary, teaches life skills, increases comprehension, stress relief, exposure to more genres, encourages dreaming and creativity; just to name just a few of them. As students get older, their love of reading starts to decline (if it was even there) in the first place. Offering a variety of books that were chosen based on wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation will give students choices of books that they may or may not have found themselves. As students get older, they need to realize that reading is such a powerful tool that allow them to analyze literature and master the content of the entire curriculum. I wish for my students to have that lifelong tool of reading, but also to enjoy reading for a lifetime.

Budget Narrative

The budget is for 2 sets of the 15 current 22-23, Grades 6-8 Sunshine State Readers books. The books will be purchased from Barnes and Noble, using the educator discount.
