Do you remember the joy of picking up your printed photographs at the neighborhood pharmacy, thumbing through those pictures and smiling at the memories, then placing your favorites on a mirror or refrigerator as a daily reminder of that moment in time? Or receiving a hand written letter, that you would hold in your hands, and as your read it (and reread it) you would feel the connection with that person, no matter how far or how close. The goal of this grant is to give the students and families at Herbert Cambridge Elementary the opportunity to experience that same feeling through a positive hand written note and a printed picture of our students, with the benefits of increasing student self esteem, building home-school connections and reinforcing positive choices and growth through a shared statement that we are proud of them.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 284

Thank you so much for funding one of my very favorite projects. This project brought so much joy to me, the students at Herbert Cambridge Elementary, and their families. I had so much fun capturing special moments around campus with my camera and sharing them with our HCE students and families through a printed picture and a hand written letter. When the students received their pictures, they would beam and expressed excitement to take them home. Parents would reach out to me to say thank you for the picture and the positive thoughts shared in the letter. Teachers would comment on the students' reaction to receiving the picture and the letter. There was one student in particular that really reinforced that value of what I was doing. He was a student that sometimes struggled making good choices, and at times, I was the person who had to remove him from the classroom when he was having difficulty. I felt like our relationship had become strained. I wrote him a letter, the teacher commented on how much he appreciated the letter, and how special he felt. Our connection was restored and it grew, we were then able to work together to make better choices.

The photo printer came with an added benefit of being able to print and post pictures of students throughout the school building, promoting a stronger sense of belonging for students at HCE. This also helped increase student self esteem and pride, while reinforcing and inspiring the amazing things happening at Herbert Cambridge Elementary. Thank you again for your generous gift to fund this project, it has definitely made a difference in my practice as a school counselor, for our school, our students and our families. I can't wait to continue it next year.

There definitely is power in a printed photograph and a handwritten letter!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Pictures will be taken through the school day of students participating in various activities at Herbert Cambridge Elementary School. The pictures will be printed and given to students, with a hand written note to take home to share with their parents. Families will be encouraged to display the picture at home as a daily reminder of the students' positive actions at school, the pride that the parent feels for their child and reinforce the home school connection. As a licensed psychologist wrote, "Touching the photograph where a face is smiling, it is the same thing as touching a book when you read it. There's a lot of stimulation of the brain when you have that sensory experience. There is a bit lost in the move to digital."

Benefits to my students

Researchers describe the many benefits of a printed photograph displayed at home, one researcher reported a 37% increase in children's self esteem after seeing themselves in photographs for 5 weeks. Imagine the power of seeing them every day... Other researchers described the benefits of printed and displayed photographs:
- reinforce belonging and build self esteem
- display a proud reflection of who they are
- help children feel a part of an inclusive family(home and school)
- make a public statement that adults are proud of children
- helps develop stronger confidence
-reinforce the student's positive choices and growth

I strongly feel that the combination of a printed photograph of a student, accompanied by a hand written positive note will help increase self esteem in the student, build connection with both school and family. I hope that it will also reinforce a student's positive choices, improve attendance and the home school connection.
