Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 276

Providing an inviting, cozy space where students participate in not only read aloud lessons but also are free to read about the subjects that interest them, builds a foundation for the love of reading. With this love comes the desire to read more frequently resulting in improved fluency, an expanded vocabulary, and an increase in reading stamina and confidence. Developing reading proficiency is essential for success in all content areas.

I have created a SSYR incentive for all grade levels and more than half the student participate. Our ELA school improvement goal was to have our proficiency rating increase from 46% to 50%. We are excited to report our rating is now at 56%.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to help all students at Herbert Cambridge Elementary School discover a lifetime love of reading by providing a cozy, safe place in the Media Center to enjoy their favorite books.

What will be done with my students

When students come to the Media Center, they will have time to look for books they want to read and check out. While they are looking and/or after they have checked out their book(s), they can go to the HCE Cozy Reading Nook, find a comfy place to sit, and curl up with their book to read.

Benefits to my students

"Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” – Margaret Fuller
Providing an inviting space where the student can choose and read about what is interesting to them will build a foundation for the love of reading which will, in turn, improve fluency, expand vocabulary, and build reading stamina and confidence in themselves. Developing reading proficiency is essential for achieving success in school, not only in reading but in all content areas.
