Suncoast Credit Union

My goal is to increase reading proficiency for ALL students. Through weekly morning clubs that incorporate Magnetic Reading as a supplemental, instructional tool, students can close reading gaps with their peers. A small, targeted group of students will be identified through the analysis of state testing and other district wide reading assessments to reteach necessary reading skills and concepts to build more confident, skillful readers.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 72

The Magnetic Reading supplemental program has provided grade level text for struggling readers who attend morning clubs to review previously taught content.  These readers have performed below grade level on district and state assessments and have benefited from engaging in another opportunity to master grade specific reading standards.  These short, targeted passages are aligned with 3, 4, or 5th grade level standards and the curriculum has embedded scaffolded support in a gradual release model for students to acquire the skills needed to become proficient readers.  As a result of our MTSS process and morning clubs, intermediate reading proficiency has increased in large part due to your support in acquiring these supplemental reading materials to help close students' reading comprehension gaps.

Thank you for your generosity in purchasing these consumable books for student use.  Your support has made an incredible difference in not only increasing their reading abilities but also in giving students the confidence to apply the skills that they have acquired to new reading contexts for continued learning!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to increase reading proficiency for ALL students. Through weekly morning clubs that incorporate Magnetic Reading as a supplemental, instructional tool, students can close reading gaps with their peers. A small, targeted group of students will be identified through the analysis of state testing and other district wide reading assessments to reteach necessary reading skills and concepts to build more confident, skillful readers.

What will be done with my students

The Magnetic Reading program facilitates lively discourse with grade level content using a variety of texts to help struggling readers build confidence while mastering critical reading skills. Morning club teachers meet with small groups of approximately ten students twice a week to teach flexible lessons that are completely aligned with Florida’s B.E.S.T. standards. With the implementation of this evidence-based approach to reading with scaffolded support, students may be equipped to achieve grade level reading proficiency by the end of the year.

While building knowledge and vocabulary, students acquire reading skills through the gradual release, “I Do, We Do, You Do” model. Teachers can measure individual reading growth and make real time data informed decisions about instructional next steps by reviewing weekly assessment and scaffolding data reports. They design and differentiate their instruction in small groups so that every student can read for comprehension!

Benefits to my students

The purpose for this grant is to provide students reading below grade level with access to high quality, on grade level reading material about content that is appropriate to their age and interests. Thank you for your consideration in donating these funds to purchase Magnetic Reading student workbooks and Teacher’s guides, as alternative resources for our most struggling readers. With reading proficiency as the goal, the Magnetic reading program exposes students to quality literature while providing the necessary support to help them improve their reading fluency and comprehension of grade level texts.
