Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 0

The goal of this grant was to introduce digital weather monitoring tools in order to make local weather pattern connections as well as to predict weather patterns locally.

The Meterorology station was set up right outside of our classroom and is referred to almost DAILY! We utilized the tool to track High/Low pressure fronts, measure rainfall (or lack of this year!) , temperature, air pressure, humidity, and a plethora of UV and solar radiation.

The real time access allowed the students so many AHA- Moments to daily life! By the end of the year they were pointing out relevant data to the outside conditions and even predicting what was to come without even being asked!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to familiarize my students with weather tools in order to empower them to analyze and predict weather patterns locally.

What will be done with my students

Students will have DAILY direct access to monitor school weather conditions on a digital screen to measure rainfall, wind speed/direction, temperature, air pressure, humidity, UV and solar radiation. We will work our daily measuremmnts into the 6th grade currcium, which inlcude undersdtanding the Earth's atmosphere, weather patterns as well as graphing and mapping analysis.

Benefits to my students

Learning to predict weather will empower my students with information that they can utilize to reduce weather-related losses and even enhance societal benefits, such as protection of life and property, public health and overall safety. Students will learn to make informed choices based on weather patterns and connections.

The study of the weather in these early years is important because it can help students understand that some events in nature have a repeating pattern. It also is important for students to study the earth repeatedly because they take years to acquire the knowledge that they need to complete the picture.
