Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

I teach 7th grade civics. In May my students take an end of the year state test, that is worth 33% of their final grade. They are accountable for answering 60+ questions about the 36 benchmarks we have studied. This covers everything from John Locke, The Articles of Confederation to Landmark Supreme Court Cases. It is a lot of content, taught in a rather short period of time. To many of my students this can seem overwhelming.

In order to relieve some of the pressure, I try to incorporate fun and movement as much as I can. As we review material, they love to get out in our courtyard and start scratching. I have the word/term on one card and the definition on another. The students scratch their cards and then start moving around and talking about the content to find their match. This is their favorite activity. The ask to review words so we can go outside and move. After a long and content rich week; it is wonderful to see them have fun, using the content they have learned.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To acquire the resources to make scratch off index cards for vocabulary practice, review games, exit tickets and create collaborative groups.

What will be done with my students

Students will use the vocabulary scratch offs to reinforce the words we are working on. Each student will receive a flash card. They will scratch it off to reveal either a vocabulary word or its definition. Students will move around the room to find their match and will share why they are a match. Cards will also be used for review as students scratch off their card to reveal a practice question to answer. This could be used as an exit ticket or a discussion springboard. The third set will be numbered and will students scratch them off to see who they are going to be working with that day.

Benefits to my students

My students will learn to work with different groups and collaborate productively. Vocabulary practice will be lively and fun. Students will improve their use and application of vocabulary for the unit(s) we have covered. They will also practice answering content related questions citing evidence.
