After attending Get Your Teach On, a national conference in 2021 and again in 2022, I began working on bringing the magic of the Neon Read On program to life in my classroom. The goal of this program is to break down nonfiction reading passages into digestible bites. It focuses on finding main idea, text structure, writing a strong summary paragraph, and having students mark up texts for a deeper understanding all while having fun!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

After attending Get Your Teach On, a national conference in 2021 and again in 2022, I began working on bringing the magic of the Neon Read On program to life in my classroom. The goal of this program is to break down nonfiction reading passages into digestible bites. It focuses on finding main idea, text structure, writing a strong summary paragraph, and having students mark up texts for a deeper understanding all while having fun!

What will be done with my students

The foundation of Neon Read On is to have students use strategies to decode and analyze a nonfiction text, and then bring it to life using black lights and other engaging tools like magnifying glasses, neon glasses, highlighters, and legos. The neon glasses are called "Pattern Pairs" and they will be used to find text structure patterns within the texts. The black light flashlights provide an amazing culminating activity to make the most important details glow in the dark. Finally, students will be able to compose a summary, which is another daunting task. By following the steps of Neon Read On, all students will feel successful!

Benefits to my students

Studies have shown that close reading and student engagement can be instrumental in student academic success. These kits and training will create magical lessons in the classroom and create lifelong readers and learners! By being engaged, students will be more likely to retain the information which is a win-win for everyone!
