Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 22

We have received two issues of each of our 4 magazines so far. We will continue to get new issues throughout the rest of the school year. The kids absolutely love reading the magazines. They get so excited when I bring in a new issue. They love reading them together and discussing the different topics. They also love finishing their work a little early so they can go over and check out a magazine. Thank you so much for helping me provide this opportunity to my students!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To engage my students in reading about different current science and social studies topics by providing high-interest, current magazines in my classroom library.

What will be done with my students

I will get a subscription to 4 different magazines for kids that I will preview with students each month when they come to get them interested. Then they will be available for check out in my classroom library for the kids to enjoy and learn.

Magazine Descriptions:
-National Geographic Kids - High-interest science articles
-Sports Illustrated for Kids - nutrition tips, information about different sports and athletes.
-Ask - Articles tackle kids' questions about art, inventions, science, and more.
-Faces - Each issue focuses on a different culture through stories about daily life, folk tales, history, and traditions.

Benefits to my students

This will benefit students in many ways. Magazines will keep them up to date on some current events. Also, for students who may be overwhelmed to choose a large novel to read, they can get interested through a shorter article and then choose to look up the topic in more detail and get a book on that topic through the school library. In my classroom, students know that if they are finished with an assignment early, they read. When students are in between books or have forgotten their book at home, reading an issue of a magazine that day is a great alternative!
