Original Grant Overview
Goal
The goal is for my first grade students to experience hands-on activities that connect science, engineering, math, role play and language arts.
What will be done with my students
Each week students will have the opportunity to choose one of the 6 self-contained, science bins to explore. Students will work together to plant a garden, leave their mark in space, explore a pond, work in a construction site, build an igloo in snow, and visit the ocean. These activities will support the science curriculum in first grade because students learn about the senses, observable properties, plant parts, pushes and pulls, gravity, the Sun and other stars, rocks and soil, the world around us including plants and animals and their basic needs. Language arts will be integrated with some students creating a written report.
Benefits to my students
The students will benefit from these bins in many ways. They will learn social skills, while having the opportunity to "play" in the science. Each bin will allow for unique and creative learning in different environments that the students do not have experiences. For example, the winter bin will have fake snow (cotton balls, beads, and clear marbles), figurines from the movie Frozen, and wooden craft sticks for fencing and cabins. The bins will be used within the entire first grade.
