Suncoast Credit Union

As the media specialist, I want to reach as many students as possible to encourage a love of reading and to help our students develop their independent reading and listening skills. My goal is to add at least two copies of each of this year's Sunshine State Young Readers Award books and SSYRA Jr. books to our media center collection.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 420

Kinder and first grade students loved listening to the SSYRA jr books this year during library Storytime. After each story they used a recording sheet to rate the book.  2nd-5th grade students independently took Reading Counts Quizzes after either reading or listening to the books. They recorded their scores on bookmarks. For every three books, students received a Brag Tag along with rewards such as free books, popcorn party, certificate on the news, and an ice cream party! Five 2nd grade students have already read all 15 SSYRA jr. books and a few have even begun to read the 3-5 SYRA books.  Students who have read or listened to at least 3 books can vote for their favorites. The SSYRA jr program has been very successful for our primary students this year.  The SSYRA books have not been quite as well received by our 3rd-5th graders but as teachers have begun reading them aloud, interest has increased.  All of the books will continue to be available for checkout in the library so students will have access to these diverse and award winning books for years to come.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

As the media specialist, I want to reach as many students as possible to encourage a love of reading and to help our students develop their independent reading and listening skills. My goal is to add at least two copies of each of this year's Sunshine State Young Readers Award books and SSYRA Jr. books to our media center collection.

What will be done with my students

To start, I will preview this year's SSYRA and Jr nominees on the morning news and in the media center. As students successfully read and listen to SSYRA books, they will be recognized on a digital picture frame and earn Brag Tag rewards and incentives. Students will be eligible to vote for their favorite book in the spring after listening to/reading at least three of the books. Students who read all SSYRA books will be invited to a special end of year celebration.
SSYRA Jr. books will be read aloud to primary students in the media center and in classrooms. These, too, will be available for check out.

Benefits to my students

Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. The benefits of participation in the SSYRA/SSYRA Jr. program are many. It is a statewide reading motivational program for students in grades K through 8. The goal is to encourage students to read books independently for pleasure that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency. Increased fluency builds vocabulary and comprehension.
Students will also have the chance to experience the voting process which will be run by the Supervisor of Elections. Students will use ballots and voting booths to cast their vote for their favorite book.

Budget Narrative

My budget allows me to purchase at least 2 copies of 19 different SSYRA (soft cover) and Jr. (hard cover) titles, a total of 38 books. My quote is from Barnes and Noble and it includes an educator's discount. At the end of last year I was able to purchase 5 SSYRA titles and 6 SSYRA Jr titles. These funds would provide our students and teachers access to all 30 SSYRA and Jr. books.

Items

# Item Cost
1 10 SSYRA titles (2 each SC) $162.00
2 9 SSYRA Titles (2 each HC) $233.00
  Total: $395.00
