Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

This year my students have enjoyed reading and learning all about current issues using Scholastic News Articles.  We read about things that have impacted people and the world around us.  Scholastic news really helped my students improve their understanding of the central message when they read non-fiction articles.  One of the articles that my students loved was called Surf for the Earth.  In this article, my students learned all about how Ryan Harris made surf boards out of trash.  In particular, Mr. Harris used paper face masks and straws that people were just throwing on the ground around them.  My students were completely engaged in the article.  They were all able to identify the central idea of the article, they wrote about how Ryan Harris made a great impact on the Earth and they discovered how someone reused and recycled face masks and straws into surf boards.  There were so many awesome and engaging articles that we read together this year.  Receiving this grant helped my students become more aware of current events happening in our world today and ways that they can be kind and open minded to the issues that impact so many in the world around them.  Thank you to the Florida License for learning License Plate Fund for helping to make learning magical for my 2nd graders!!!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to use Scholastic News Articles as a way to have my students connect to current events in our world and make real world connections in a way that will empower my students to be more open-minded and aware of the world events around them. Scholastic News is a fun and engaging way to make reading about current events more fun for kids!

What will be done with my students

The students in my class would be able to use the Scholastic News articles as a way to be aware of current events in our world today. Exposing the students to real world current events today can help to build character, empathy, cultural awareness and kindness that they can implement into their daily lives both in the classroom and in their communities.

Benefits to my students

My students would benefit from this request because it would allow them to have a fresh perspective to current events in our world. Reading about current events would allow my class of 20 students to become more aware of real- world events and current issues today. Building character, understanding for other people and their perspectives and creating “kind kids,” will benefit our society not just for today, but for years to come.
