Goal

My goal is to give all students in my classroom a voice. Fifth grade students are eager to learn, but are often still shy and soft spoken when it comes to class discussions. The QBall throwable microphone will ensure that everyone can be heard clearly, enabling students to feel more confident when voicing their thoughts and opinions. 

What will be done with my students

Elementary students are expected to voice their thinking, opinions, cite evidence to support thoughts, and be engaged in classroom discussions. Adding some fun and excitement into the classroom with the QBall soft throwable microphone would increase student engagement and attention during all lessons and subjects throughout the day. I would love to use this microphone during our reading and writing lessons which include debates, Socratic seminars, and class discussions. The microphone would also be a fabulous tool when students present their Genius Hour "passion projects" to their classmates. Along with helping students master grade level content, one of my main goals with my fifth graders is to increase their confidence in their presentation and speaking skills. I believe the fun aspect of this microphone would prompt every student to want to participate. 

Benefits to my students

Studies have shown that a child's cognitive auditory processing is not fully developed until age 15. In order to comprehend speech clearly, they need to hear at more than twice the level of your average adult. While students often learn from each other, they can't learn what they can't hear. This microphone will give everyone a chance to participate in class discussions in a fun and exciting way. 

Budget Narrative

Item will be purchased from the most cost effective source. Since the QBall is not available in local stores, shipping is included in my grant request.
