Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 15

The students in my classroom thoroughly enjoyed reading the Scholastic Magazies.  The website that had additional activities to deepen their understanding was great!  I would use this every year with my class!  The lessons that were built on Scholastic kept students highly motivated and kept them highly engaged with content.  My expectations were surpassed when it came to students entering quality answers to questions.  I really enjoyed the process and I intend to continue to use this to drive instruction and learning.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to motivate students and develop them into fluent readers using high-quality science and social studies nonfiction weekly readers.

What will be done with my students

This grant will be used to increase student interest in reading a weekly nonfiction magazine full of text features and interesting stories. The stories are written on a second grade level and increases in complexity as the year goes on.

Benefits to my students

Second grade is a transitional grade in which reading informational texts is an important component. One large benefit of the Scholastic Weekly readers is that it provides opportunity for vocabulary, reading, and writing practice.

Budget Narrative

I am requesting $119 to be able to purchase a class set of Scholastic News weekly readers ($5.95 X 20 students). Students are able to mark the text, write on the pages, and take them home.
