Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

Saturday May 7th 2022, VOE hosted a family Leader In Me day! We had many arts and craft station and the button making station was the kit. Students learned about the process of making a personalized pin back button. The participants were able to choose between drawings, apply a sticker and making a button. The button machine was the science portion and parents/students and staff were mesmerized by the simple machine that made the buttons. It was a educational experience that was so much fun. Thank You for the gift!

What will be done with my students

Students will be joined by their families at a community art making evening or Saturday event. Families will learn about the history of pin-back buttons dating from 1787 to the 1940’s. Families will be able to share their memories about how buttons were traded, collected and are still relevant today as fashion accessory. Families will be provided an array of materials (on-line design space, recycled fabrics, magazine images, stamps and drawing, coloring, and paints…) to choose from to create the button designs. They will be guided to create images that reflect their personal/family values. Then they will be able to use a pinback button hand pressing machine to create their personal handmade buttons.

Benefits to my students

Students along with their families will learn about entrepreneurial options that are available for creative people. They will learn how artists create images that can translate into mass-produced items. I have first-hand experience how families at VOE love to make simple art projects together—for many years we have hosted family events, and the art room is always one of the busiest places. Who doesn’t like to have a little fun and create?
