Suncoast Credit Union

My goal for this project is to give students choice and to allow students to study/read different genres! I want my students to have access to the 2021-2022 Sunshine State Readers. “The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Program is a statewide reading motivational program for students in grades 3 through 8, in a collaborative effort between the Florida Association of Media in Education (FAME) and the Florida Department of Education (DOE). Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation.” These books allow students to broaden their horizons and expand their knowledge across genres.
Each year a new set of 15 books is chosen to represent the Sunshine State Readers program. I would love to be able to have multiple copies of these titles in my classroom for my students to check out.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 75

Students loved to be able to choose what they were going to read and having access right at their fingertips made them more engaged in their learning.. This allowed students to take ownership of their own reading, as well as created a more engaging learning environment for students. Having multiple copies of the Sunshine State Readers in my classroom allowed students to always have a book in their hands! Students were encouraged to read 5, 10, 15 of the 2021-2022 SSYRA books! The students set goals on how many books they want to read. Students kept  track of each book they read, took a short comprehension quiz and participated in book talks with their peers.  Many students were  awarded for their accomplishments on reading 5, 10, 15 SSYRA books! Every time a student read a SSYRA book, they hung a sun in the room whih created healthy challenges and competition. The students loved this!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal for this project is to give students choice and to allow students to study/read different genres! I want my students to have access to the 2021-2022 Sunshine State Readers. “The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Program is a statewide reading motivational program for students in grades 3 through 8, in a collaborative effort between the Florida Association of Media in Education (FAME) and the Florida Department of Education (DOE). What will be done with my students

Choice is the key word! Students love to be able to choose what they are going to read. This allows students to take ownership of their own reading, as well as creates a more engaging learning environment for students. Having multiple copies of the Sunshine State Readers in my classroom will allow students to always have a book in their hands! Student choice is key and giving students the opportunity to choose books they want to read will increase their comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, etc. In my classroom, students will be encouraged to read 5, 10, 15 of the 2021-2022 SSYRA books! The students will set goals on how many books they want to read. Students will keep track of each book they read, take a short comprehension quiz and participate in book talks with their peers. In addition, students will be able to present their understanding in a creative way. Students will be awarded for their accomplishments on reading 5, 10, 15 SSYRA books!
