Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 36

Thanks to the generosity of Judith Palay’s donation, Miss Sanchez and I were able to bring a variety of informational texts on current events into the hands of our third grade students at Vineyards Elementary School. Our students love reading informational texts and under this year’s COVID restrictions and procedures access to these types of texts has been limited. Through the Scholastic News and Science Spin resource students have their own colorful, grade-level text, that they can annotate as they hunt for text-evidence. These diversified texts have been a supplemental resource for our writing, social studies, and science instruction.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to bring informational texts into the hands of our students in our school, and virtually. Using these texts, we can integrate English/Language Arts standards with Science and Social Studies content organically. The students will be able to apply their reading strategies and standards while learning the cross-curricular content.

What will be done with my students

Our third grade students will have access to informational text every week and be able to apply their grade-level standards while learning about real-world content in Science and Social Studies. They will also have digital access to vocabulary games, academic videos and more as a supplemental resource to each week's topic.

Benefits to my students

The Scholastic News and Science Spin texts and digital resources provide students with engaging topics that foster curiosity and in-depth classroom discussions. These resources integrate multiple content areas and give the students a resource that they can keep. These resources expose our students to academic vocabulary, nonfiction text features, graphs, charts, and more.
