Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

Before we received the grant from Champions for Learning our students never had access to classical stories like Romeo and Juliet,  Catcher in the Rye, Tom Sawyer and Hamlet.  Most of the stories in our curriculum covered all of the standards however it did not allow students to dig further into understanding classic literature themes and characters.  Our students were aware that the stories they were reading were not the same stories as the General Education students. The inspire classics grants allowed the students to be more fully engaged with the literature that their same age Gen Ed peers are also reading.

With our general curriculum the students on the pretest were scoring around a 20 to 30% correct and on the posttest were scoring between a 60 to 70% correct

Once we introduced Inspire Classics the pretest scores were around 20 to 30% correct however the posttest scores were between 80 to 100% correct.

We also saw an increase in our benchmark scores from the fall to the spring.

Typically we see an increase of about 15 to 20% skill increase from the fall to the spring benchmark, this year with introducing Inspire Classics we did see a 25 to 30% increase in the reading comprehension scores.

The Inspire Classics stories are a lot more engaging and it has given us the ability to delve further into characters, plot, setting, protagonist, antagonist and rise and fall of a story.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My students will increase their fluency and comprehension while delving into classic literature adapted to their level.

What will be done with my students

This program is a unfunded supplement to our district approved Language Arts curriculum which would provide
immersive, equitable access to groundbreaking literature for students and standards-based instruction to fully support comprehension. Inspire Classics gives every student the ability to connect to the literature that’s being taught to their peers in general education while also covering ELA course requirements and state standards. This includes ELA standards for comprehension, vocabulary, inference, main idea and details, author’s purpose, evaluating and analyzing texts, and determining the theme or central idea.

Benefits to my students

Comprehension questions for every chapter and act, and all end‑of‑book activities, are differentiated to four levels. Levels 1–3 are based on alternate standards while Level 4 is based on general education standards. The text-only and symbol supported vocabulary activities are great for building skills across all levels.

Budget Narrative

Funds will be used to purchase one teacher license and materials can be downloaded, printed and/or copied by the individual for all of their students.
