My goal is to promote graphic novels as a way to get our reluctant readers excited about reading. Even our most resistant readers seem to gravitate toward this popular genre. Adding more graphic novel series to our library will encourage struggling readers. As they build reading skills, and it will motivate them to read even more.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 250

Third, fourth, and fifth grade students were so excited about our new Graphic Novel selections! They wanted to read all the books in each of the series! Once I got them hooked on reading the graphics, I was able to entice them with some the original novels that inspired them. Many classics, fiction, and nonfiction books are being published as graphic novels creating another new way to reach those reluctant readers.  Fifth grade students in particular became regulars in the library and began suggesting additional series.  The graphics I purchased with this grant money are still in high demand and are always listed in our most popular and checked out titles!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to promote graphic novels as a way to get our reluctant readers excited about reading. Even our most resistant readers seem to gravitate toward this popular genre. Adding more graphic novel series to our library will encourage struggling readers. As they build reading skills, and it will motivate them to read even more.

What will be done with my students

Students in upper elementary can be intimidated by the length and text of traditional novels. However, they want something other than picture books to read. That's where graphic novels come in. Graphic novels can bridge the gap for students. They offer full length stories and interesting characters in a format that incorporates more pictures and dialog. I will encourage students to present book talks and book trailers highlighting new and favorite series on the morning news. Graphic novels will be displayed and available for check out in the library.

Benefits to my students

Graphic novels appeal to all levels of readers but are particularly helpful for our struggling and ELL readers. Graphic novels offer low pressure reading which can foster a love of reading as well as improve reading skills. These readers begin to develop literacy skills such as reading comprehension, inference, and vocabulary, without being bogged down by the format of a traditional novel. As students develop reading skills they will seek out books with fewer pictures and more words. And the more these students read, the more they develop as readers.

Budget Narrative

I'm asking for funds to purchase new graphic novel series and add titles to our existing graphics. I'm hoping to add approximately 35-40 new graphic novels to the library. i will survey students to help guide my purchases.
