The goal of this project to get my students off the computer and back to the basics of writing. As a virtual teacher, all student work is completed and submitted through an online platform. The basic skills of writing are going by the wayside and we need to change that.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 23

The hardest part about teaching virtually is being able to correctly assess the students. This grant enabled me to actually see and evaluate the students' writing. All written pieces had to be mailed to me. This kept the students accountable and could not slack off. Many assignments that I did not require mailing, were not done. I learned that everything had to be mailed or submited on the computer. This project helped my virtual students with their writing skills. So many of them had become accustomed to typing. They were not using punctuation or proper grammar. Handwriting was almost unreadable. I feel that this project helped these students improve all their writing skills as well as to be better prepared for third grade. It has truly been amazing. Thank yo so very lmuch!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project to get my students off the computer and back to the basics of writing. As a virtual teacher, all student work is completed and submitted through an online platform. The basic skills of writing are going by the wayside and we need to change that.

What will be done with my students

Students will be given self stamped and self addressed envelopes for their teacher. Most of the ELA standards for second grade will be met with this project. We will begin with letter writing and then move on to poetry, narrative, expository and opinion writing. Students will mail their work to their teacher after each assignment. The teacher will then compile their work for an individual portfolio

Benefits to my students

This project will make sure these students do not lose the basic ability to compose and write. These are different times and our educational best practices need to adjust to online learning, but not disregard what is vital and important to the educational process. It will last the duration of virtual learning with biweekly assignments mailed in.

Budget Narrative

This grant would enable the students to compose and write to their teacher six different times and will take them to the end of December.
