Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 175

This project started with 175 virtual students in grades K-5. Many of those students came back to school in the fall and winter to learn in person. The other teachers and I saw that some changes needed to be made. Less students were at home, more were here at school. We continued to have the virtual students send in their writing. We then added a pen pal portion to the project. Second and third grade had the greatest number of students still learning from home. We decided to keep the letter writing going by creating pen pals. We wanted our virtual students to feel connected to our school and feel part of the community. Students at school started writing to students at home and visa versa. All virtual students in second and third grade began writing back and forth and are still doing it even as of today. This project became so much more than just teaching and attaining our writing standards. It became a social and emotional project as well. I am so proud of this project and our students. It was so amazing, we will continue it throughout the summer. The students will be given addressed and stamped envelopes for their pen pals and their teachers. We will not stop writing. We love it so much. Thank you!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is for all virtual learners at Veterans Memorial to improve their writing skills. This will be accomplished through letter writing assignments that will me mailed to their teachers.

What will be done with my students

There are 10 classrooms that are virtual classes at Veterans Memorial. In order to submit an assignment, it has to be typed on a computer. These students are missing out on the basic fundamental skill of writing. All writing standards for all six grade levels, would be addressed and enhanced by the basic communication skill of letter writing. Teachers will send their 175 students self addressed and stamped envelopes. Teachers will use their grade level writing standards to assign a topic to their students. Students will write and mail their teachers.

Benefits to my students

This project will last the duration of virtual learning. Wonderful Writers OFF the Web will start with letter writing and then evolve to address the standards of narrative, opinion and expository writing. Students will mail their writing to their teachers. All writing standards across 6 grade levels would be addressed. These skills are seriously lacking in the virtual classroom. This project will help close the educational gap for these students.

Budget Narrative

$459 in stamps and $8.33 in envelopes would enable all 175 students to write and mail their teachers three times.
