Coherent with the original goal of the "WE DINE TOGETHER" international club, our purpose is to continue offering a socio-emotional space to all students seeking acceptance and relaxation, especially in such challenging times as determined by the spread of COVID-19. We would like to adapt to our circumstances and -both outdoor and indoor our school- we are promoting emotional closeness while respecting social distancing, using our "Friendship Garden" as well as a space designated at the end of our "Nation Square Hallway" leading to the outdoor garden.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 46

The students-members of the "WE DINE TOGETHER" Club at Lely High School have made the most of their opportunities, in spite of the strenuous circumstances of this school year. Receiving the grant has given them an amazing boost, both morally/emotionally and practically. They have been able to fulfill some of the goals for the improvement of the "Friendship Garden," mostly the possibility to make the garden more inviting with socially distanced seating, beautiful plants, and recycled painted pots. They have been able to meet after school and on Saturday mornings to socialize and interact, investing their time constructively, building memories that will accompany them for life, while doing something concrete for others, beside themselves. The Club was able to organize a "SPRING GAMES AT THE GARDEN" event on Saturday morning, March 27, inviting other students who participated as guests and/or volunteers. Students were thus involved in four sports (basketball, volleyball, soccer, and bocce) and two table games (Uno and Dominos), forming random teams at check-in with color-coded masks. At the conclusion of the games, prizes were given to the three winning teams, while everyone enjoyed pizza and fresh fruit as a "WE DINE TOGETHER" celebration. The impact of the preparation over several months, as well as the actual event, have been tremendous. New friendships have been born, new collaborations, a stronger support system, a consolidation of emotional and social networking that has proved its immense value in these "COVID-19" challenging times. Already we are talking about what next year will reserve for all of us...

Without the grant, the students would have had hardly any chance to operate this school year, and their presence as welcoming mentors to others would have been nulled, with consequences also on their personal motivation and their emotional sense of purpose and sense of belonging.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Coherent with the original goal of the "WE DINE TOGETHER" international club, our purpose is to continue offering a socio-emotional space to all students seeking acceptance and relaxation, especially in such challenging times as determined by the spread of COVID-19. We would like to adapt to our circumstances and -both outdoor and indoor our school- we are promoting emotional closeness while respecting social distancing, using our "Friendship Garden" as well as a space designated at the end of our "Nation Square Hallway" leading to the outdoor garden.

What will be done with my students

The students will be involved in repristinating the "Friendship Garden" -created last year thanks to a grant generously funded by Suncoast Bank through Champions for Learning, other donors, and a lot of dedication and hard work. The students will need new plants and add planters, soil and mulch, paint to recycle old planters, outdoor games (which they will create) to encourage safe aggregation, "beach-style" folding chairs for a fast and safely distant set-up, both outdoor and indoor. The students will work together during after school/Saturday morning hours to reach their goal and enable the club members to enjoy each others' interaction safely and sociably during the school year.

Benefits to my students

From the social standpoint: students will have an opportunity to live this experience together, knowing they are helping each other cope with these tough times, and offering others the opportunity to find a welcoming area in our school campus for new and/or returning students.
From the emotional stand point: our Psychologist and our Social Worker have been meeting students in the "Friendship Garden." Our Counselors or Teachers have sent over isolated students who seem to be distressed and in need of a safe harbor. Our students find this experience soothing and constructive.
From the organizational stand point: students will also have a chance to rethink the spaces and the times available (three lunch times, as we are having, for instance), and to adapt to the procedures in place for the prevention of the spread of COVID-19.
The students involved will remember this healing place/experience for ever and will treasure their opportunity to be agents of empowerment for each other.

Budget Narrative

We thank in advance anyone who is willing to support our initiative. This amount will enable the students to repristinate the "Friendship Garden" started last year and to provide easily portable seating (the folding chairs) during the three lunch sessions we are having this year, to respect social distancing and follow in-school procedure, while sharing their experiences.
