Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 400

Thanks to this grant i was able to provide 13 classrooms with a selection of high interest multi-genre chapter and picture books.  Although, I have all of the titles available in the library, having the books in the classroom has been a great resource, especially this year with having limited library access!  Many of the teachers read some of the books aloud and/or had student check out. There have even been requests for sequels which has led me to order more books in certain series! I have read all of the SSYRA Jr. Books to kinder and first grade and they are always well received!  I made a tracking sheet for intermediate students to easily mark the books they've read. When they have read 3, they are rewarded with a badge, a bookmark, and have their picture posted on the digital frame.  For safety reasons, we did not have in person voting this year.  However, classrooms voted for their favorites and often I hear students recommending their favorites to each other when they are in the library. I have had one student who has independently read all fifteen SSYRA books, thus far. She was a guest on our news, earned all the badges and prizes.  This is the first year I had upper elementary students and this has been a learning experience and a great way for me to learn about what types of books they enjoy.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

As the media specialist, I want to instill a love of reading and help students develop their independent reading skills. My goal is to provide our third, fourth, and fifth grade classrooms with engaging and high quality literature through the SSYRA (Sunshine State Young Reader Award) program.

What will be done with my students

To start, I will make classroom visits to announce and preview this year's fifteen SSYRA nominees. I'll ask teachers and students to rate their top choices. I would like to provide at least ten titles for each fourth and fifth grades and five for each third grade class. I will also consider which titles would be most appropriate for future use in our resource library. As students successfully read SSYRA books, they will be recognized on a Sunshine Wall of Fame. They will also earn Brag Tag rewards to display on their backpacks. Students will be eligible to vote for their favorite book in the spring after listening to/reading at least three of the books. Students who read all SSYRA books will be invited to a special end of year celebration.

Benefits to my students

Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. The benefits of participation in the SSYRA program are many. It is a statewide reading motivational program for students in grades 3 through 8. The goal is to encourage students to read books independently for pleasure that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency. Increased fluency builds vocabulary and comprehension.
Students will also have the chance to experience the voting process which will be run by the Supervisor of Elections. Students will use ballots and voting booths to cast their vote for their favorite book.
At the end of the year, the books will be collected and made into sets for our reading resource library so that they can be used in future classrooms.
Although, a copy of each of the highly popular SSYRA titles will be available in the library, having a selection in each classroom will allow for much greater participation.

Budget Narrative

My budget includes funds to purchase at least 10 selected SSYRA books for each fourth and fifth grade class and 5 for each third grade class. Third grade may choose books from the SSYRA or SSYRA jr. list.
