Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

The "Who was" & "Who is" books have always been popular, but now that we were able to add 35 new titles they have been more popular than ever!  There is now a section in the library dedicated just to those titles.

Students have been able to read about many famous leaders from the past and present. This correlates with the school's Leader in Me culture.

Many biographies are very mundane and boring, but these titles are clearly written for children.  The students were able to get a much deeper understanding of the subject.  I smile every time a student comes in and asks where they are located.  The circulation in our biography section has increased a whopping 60% and I believe that will increase more as the year progresses.

I will definitely be adding more of these titles in the future.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To increase students' enthusiasm for reading biographies and learning about famous people from history.

What will be done with my students

Students will read the high interest "Who was" or "Who is" biographies
Students will have an opportunity to publish a report or develop a book trailer to be shared with other students who may be interested in reading about that person. Book trailers can be connected to each title via a QR code.

Benefits to my students

This school year I am assigned to two different school libraries, Lavern Gaynor Elementary and Herbert Cambridge Elementary. I am requesting titles for the library at both schools.

These biographies are very popular. The combination of this set of books and the unique way of presenting what they have learned will create a positive and memorable learning experience for students.

This type of biography also helps students to build their sustained reading skills.

Budget Narrative

This amount will allow me to purchase 20 different paperback titles from Barnes and Noble. These books can be used for multiple years.
