Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

The "Neon Read On!" grant proved to be a huge success in our classroom! Students certainly enjoyed this authentic learning experience full of engagement and rigor. As students learned to read a text closely over multiple attempts, they began to understand the key details on a deeper and more complex level. The close reading strategies implemented have become a part of the reading routine. It is empowering to watch students use the structures provided to them to reach new heights as independent readers. The materials found within the kits added excitement to the learning process while simultaneously encouraging students to interact with nonfiction text in a meaningful manner. Consequenlty, students were able to successfully answer comprehension questions about the text they closely read.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to help students develop a process for close reading nonfiction texts that will empower them to conquer complex texts with ease.

What will be done with my students

Students will be given an authentic learning experience full of engagement and rigor. Individual student “Neon Read On Kits” will include tools and gadgets that will help bring reading to a new level of excitement. The strategy of “close reading” requires students to read a nonfiction text multiple times; each time focusing on a different skill allowing students to better understand the context of what they are reading. Throughout their reading, students will use plastic glasses to help them “search” for pictures and other text features, a magnifying glass to “search” for key details, highlighters to identify the key details, and building blocks to make personal connections to the text. The materials found within the kits are neon in color, so when the classroom lights are turned off and student black lights are turned on, their learning glows! Students will see a summary of the most important details they read come to life on their papers, and the glowing building blocks allow the teacher to see the number of connections students are making while reading. This learning process will be continued so that students eventually feel confident and comfortable going through the close reading steps when reading and working individually. The kits allow students the opportunity to develop skills they can rely on throughout their schooling journey.

Benefits to my students

Teaching students to become “close readers” is crucial as they develop into independent readers who interpret texts and make deep connections. Ultimately, when students connect to a text on a deeper level, they are able to synthesize their own ideas and perspectives. Benefits of close reading include identifying different levels of understanding and inquiry, building upon diverse skill levels of different students, critical thinking, and cross curricular applications. Research shows that the complexity level of nonfiction texts challenge students and by providing students with appropriate reading strategies, they are able to read above their comfort level and enjoy reading in a deeper (more personal) way.

Budget Narrative

The purchase of the “Neon Read On Kit” includes the Neon Read On Box to house all student kits, (30) individual student kits (that include pattern pairs glasses, highlighter, magnifying glass, individual black light flashlight, and Legos), a digital curriculum that is fully aligned to Common Core Standards, and an instructional video that explains each step of the close reading process. Batteries for the student black lights are not included in the purchase on the Kit, so the listed price is reflective of Amazon products. A flat rate shipping fee for the Kit is applied.
