Suncoast Credit Union

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read through my request.

With so many events happening in the world today, I feel that it’s important for students to connect with them as much as possible. When I’m teaching, I try to make what they’re learning relevant to my students’ lives. My goal for my project is to provide each student their own copy of a Scholastic Newsletter which will give them insight into both history and current events.

My other goal for my project is to provide my math students with their own copy of the DynaMath magazine. This magazine gives students the opportunity to practice their math skills in real-life scenarios. This will allow my students to see the real-world applications of what they are learning. Because I will be teaching two math classes, I am requesting twice the amount of DynaMath magazines compared to the number of Scholastic Newsletters I will need.

Students are asked to learn so much, and they’re told that everything they learn is crucial. It is my belief that students who get the opportunity to apply those skills in a context that’s relevant to them are more likely to become proficient in them.

Thank you for your time and your consideration.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 50

My students have been enjoying our regular subscriptions to DynaMath and Scholastic News.

The DynaMath subscription has allowed my students to practice those foundational skills that they don't regularly get a chance to work on. This helps them with their confidence in fifth grade math if they understand the base concept that they worked on in prior years. The math concepts are integrated in texts that are entertaining for the students to read. It's a win-win for everyone. Not only are they reading things that they enjoy, but they are working on those skills that they really need to work on.

The Scholastic News is giving my students insight on things that are occurring in the world today. This is capturing their attention, and they aren't even realizing that they are reading lengthy texts. They have read more about the election process, how kids their age are helping during the pandemic, and why we celebrate Thanksgiving every year. Their reading comprehension in nonfiction texts has improved tremendously, and it's wonderful to watch.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Each student will receive their own copy of the Scholastic Newsletter and DynaMath. At the beginning of each math class, students will read the next story in their DynaMath magazine and then use that information to answer the math questions. This will serve as the spiral review portion of the math lesson. The Scholastic Newsletters will be used during the reading block as a way to help them get interested in what they’re reading. The information from the newsletters will also be used during writing to give students the opportunity to elaborate on their understanding in their own words.

Benefits to my students

Giving students the chance to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios will allow them to make those same connections outside of the classroom. If students work through a DynaMath scenario where they solve the math involved in baking, then they can apply that understanding when they are baking themselves. Reading about historic or current events will help develop student interest in the subject which will help to improve their comprehension from what they read.
