My goal is to encourage students/staff to read aloud in our courtyards as students are sitting in the morning, waiting for teachers to pick them up. Student engagement will be at a high level as they love to hear peers' reading. It should also improve the oral presentation standards, as presenters will need to practice prior to reading!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 550

Poinciana Pelicans would like to thank our Poinciana Civic Association
for sponsoring our
Reading Karoke in the Courtyard!
While we were in the middle of the project as the school year was uprooted,
there are many small things to celebrate!

First of all, the equipment was purchased in November
and a game plan was put in place with a select group of 5th grade students
willing to be in charge of the project.  Students learned how to properly store the machines,
use them in the courtyards, change batteries, and hook up multiple microphones.

Next, we practiced using them in the Media Center for oral presentations, story read alouds,
and poetry readings.  A schedule was created to have students sign up to read in the Courtyards.

The managers were prepared to start going into the Courtyard after spring break, so there was some disappointment when we were told that we would be learning from home :(

We are still excited to implement this project and anticipate it to be
an ongoing presentation for years to come.  Once again, thanks to our local
Poinciana Civic Association and
Champions for Learning...
your support means so much to our school!!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to encourage students/staff to read aloud in our courtyards as students are sitting in the morning, waiting for teachers to pick them up. Student engagement will be at a high level as they love to hear peers' reading. It should also improve the oral presentation standards, as presenters will need to practice prior to reading!

What will be done with my students

There will be 2 portable karaoke machines available for our courtyards. Students/staff will sign up in the Media Center for a time to read aloud to either primary or intermediate grades. Included on the sign up sheet will be the title of the book and a practice schedule with the Media Specialist or Assistant. Once, approved, students may take machine to courtyard and read aloud to peers. These machines allow multiple microphones to be attached so read alouds might become plays! It is my hope that students of all ages will be excited to read aloud!

Benefits to my students

Research shows that reading aloud to children improves their vocabulary, listening comprehensions, and general skills such as sitting and responding as an audience. For those students who will do the reading, benefits include time to practice fluency, preparing for an oral presentation, and working on prosody (emotional impact of reading). This will also help bring more structure to the morning wait time.

Budget Narrative

There will be a PA and 2 microphones available for the Primary and Intermediate Courtyards on a daily basis. The PA has rechargeable batteries and has wheels so it is very convenient to take outside. The headsets can be used together to let duos read.
