To help the students on my caseload to meet their IEP goals, as well as to develop their independent writing skills. I hope to "say good-bye to blank stares at empty pages" when they're given a writing prompt! Ultimately, my students will produce detailed and organized essays, every time!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 35

I have been able to utilize the SQ Write program during my weekly oral & written communication intervention groups this year.  This has been a valuable tool to teach my students self-questioning strategies needed to guide them to become better writers.

The focus on developing critical thinking skills to generate ideas and to organize thoughts to plan writing has been an on-going process.  I am certain that I will continue to utilize this program in order to help my current and future students to become more confident and successful with the writing process.

I am grateful for the generosity of the community with their support of education and all of the challenges that we face!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To help the students on my caseload to meet their IEP goals, as well as to develop their independent writing skills. I hope to "say good-bye to blank stares at empty pages" when they're given a writing prompt! Ultimately, my students will produce detailed and organized essays, every time!

What will be done with my students

In the small group therapy setting, as well as within the general education classroom where I provide inclusion speech-language services, I will utilize the "SQ Write" writing program. This research-based approach to writing will develop students' executive functioning skills with a unique self-questioning technique that will be modeled and taught. They will develop the tools to become effective, organized, and self-reliant writers. They will be guided through the writing process and taught to use self-questioning, rehearse answers and convert them into complete, well-structured sentences.

Benefits to my students

Through the use of this one-of-a-kind approach to writing, students will develop their ability to create high-quality writing products that will meet and exceed Florida State Standards in writing. They will also develop critical thinking skills by independently applying a self-questioning process that will help them to generate ideas and answers on a simple, yet powerful "thought organizer." Students will learn executive functioning skills that will become a part of their repertoire to enable them to manage writing tasks needed in all subject areas.

Budget Narrative

The SQ Write Teacher kit includes 1 spiral-bound teacher guide, 1 student kit, 1 "TO" (Thought Organizer) tablet, and 2 training webinars. The SQ Write Student Kits provide each student with individual folders, self-questioning technique instructions, and graphic "thought organizers" for their writing drafts. The SQ Write Poster will be utilized for guided instruction within the general education classroom setting.
