Suncoast Credit Union

As a reading coach, my goal is to successfully implement and incorporate the Orton-Gillingham Structured Literacy program at our school. This program combines multi-sensory teaching strategies with systematic, sequential lessons focused on phonics.
It is my goal to have all my students on my case load be fully comfortable with the program's structure and outline.
It is my goal to teach phonics and provide intervention for reading through the OG method with integrity.
It is my goal to provide the best quality and individualized program for my students with a vast range of learning disabilities and learning challenges.
My final goal is to be able to target and identify students in grades k-12 who may have phonological processing deficits and would be a great candidate for the Orton Gillingham program. I would be able to identify the students by using the test program CTOPP-2. For the 2018-2019 school year, I had the opportunity to become trained by a speech and language therapist to be able to give the CTOPP-2 exam.
With the test, I will be able to provide evidence for students to enter an intervention program at our school.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 45

This grant provided a plethora of opportunities for our program at FBA to grow. For example, utilizing the CTOPP-2 assessment purchased with the grant funds, we were able to give quick and accurate results regarding student phonological processing abilites. This is essential to identifying areas of strength & weaknesses for reading and spelling. We were able to use the reports to partner with Collier County Public Schools and relieve a small portion of work for the evaluator. Creating a strong relationship with CCPS has been a goal of FBA for a while as we are continually having students assessed and evaluated through the CCPS systems and are very grateful for such opportunities. Using the CTOPP-2 allowed for us to see areas of strength and weakness for phonological processing which in return allowed us to make our Orton-Gillingham program more specialized for the students.

This purchase will benefit our students for years to come!

Due to the virus, we have not used a portion of the grant (binders, crayons, etc.) however, we still plan on utilizing for the 20.21 school year.

We are SO grateful for such generosity of Suncoast Credit Union and Champions for Learning and for the support they have lavished upon us. We will forever be thankful for the opportunity to enhance our program, but more importantly help provide better services for our students.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

I will see grades 1-5th weekly for small group intervention sessions.
Each session will be focused on using the Orton-Gillingham method to teach phonics and build strong foundational literacy skills all through a multi-sensory experience, which includes visual, auditory/kinesthetic practice.
Each week will include a review from the previous, learning a new concept, and targeting specific reading fluency skills/comprehension skills.
I also will be completing testing with students to determine the appropriate curriculum plan for them.

Benefits to my students

Our students will be greatly benefitted by following our OG method for structure literacy intervention. This summer, I spent personal resources and time completing and participating the Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham training. This program is highly effective for students with phonological processing disorders, dyslexia, and various literacy deficiencies.
Using this program will help our students who struggle with such, as our school has an increasing amount of students who require such intervention.
The IMSE Orton-Gillingham method is nationally recognized by the IDA, or International Dyslexia Association.
Therefore, OG is researched based and proven to increase a student's ability to decode and encode.
This program not only helps build confidence, but gives every student the opportunity to learn how to read and spell!

Budget Narrative

These items are all specific items that OG requires for teaching.
Red + Green Crayons are specific for phonetic words and sight words. When learning a new phoneme, students will use green crayons to write over a screen. This creates a kinesthetic experience when writing.
Phoneme Cards are essential to teaching OG. Each grade has an appropriate organization of phonemes within the cards.
Finally, the CTOPP-2 Exam is separate from OG. However, it is a highly respected and researched based exam that provides incredible results and very specific areas that the student needs support in. We will be able to use the test to determine levels, show progress mid and end year, and screen possible students for intervention program.
