Students will become more fluent with all four operations by choosing which operation will help them the most during their turn. They will also work on the standard of order of operations as they track the operations they have used in each turn.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 160

Prime Climb was a fun and engaging way for our 4th and 5th grade students to increase their critical thinking skills in math! This game has students using what they know about addition, subtraction, multiciplication, and division as they play to win. There are many options to players in each round of the game, so students constantly had to decide which operation would help them best, and then carry out that operation. This game was used primarily with our students who are struggling with math and need that constant practice, but we also had days throughout the year where all students had the chance to play because the love and fun of math is so important! Students loved the game so much, they were begging to play. Imgine that! Students begging to do math! Building confidence and a love for math is a big deal for elementary students. As we all know, we work harder at things we enjoy. Thank you for helping our students find a love for math!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will become more fluent with all four operations by choosing which operation will help them the most during their turn. They will also work on the standard of order of operations as they track the operations they have used in each turn.

What will be done with my students

Students in 5th grade will be introduced to the game by the math coach during intervention time and to the teachers during planning time. Students will use the game during intervention time and during targeted lessons in class to practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills.

Benefits to my students

Students will get practice with multiple operations in math and most importantly with critical thinking skills. They have to analyze the possible moves and decide which will benefit them the most. This will directly link to students having to decide which operation to do when faced with world problems.

Budget Narrative

Five games will be purchased so each of our 5th grade math teachers has a game to use with their students once they have been trained.
