Our goal is to support our students in developing a lifelong love for reading and developing reading habits that promote reading for enjoyment, choice, and interest. Research shows that students engaged in reading texts that they enjoy will apply more effort, display more stamina, and engage in more decoding strategies when given choice in reading material and motivation to read. The goal is to enhance our student’s independent reading of books through hosting three annual Reading Counts Carnivals to incentivize individual independent reading.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 601

Thank you so much to the donor of this grant, and to Champions for Learning for making this possible! The Reading Carnivals were not only a huge incentive for the students to take part in independent reading, but they were a huge success as well! Students were required to earn tickets to participate through independent reading. Students would read a book and then take a test through the Reading Counts platform online. Depending on the grade level, students would earn a certain number of tickets for each Reading Counts test that they had passed. For those students who weren’t ready to take Reading Counts tests online, tickets were awarded based on the number of letters and letter sounds they could identify, as well as how many sight words they had learned. I am excited to say that every student in the school earned tickets to participate in the Reading Carnivals we were able to hold! Tickets were used to play the various games that were purchased, including basketball, giant bowling, and ring toss, among others. Students were also able to spend their tickets at the face painting table, which was easily the most popular spot at the carnival.

We were able to hold two carnivals, one at the beginning of November, and one at the end of January. I also saw a trend that students were more motivated to read after the first Reading Carnival, because they saw how much fun they were able to have, and wanted to earn more tickets to be able to play more games. Because of the contribution of Champions for Learning, I saw students who were the most reluctant readers before this grant jump at the chance to read, and watching their confidence grow when they passed a Reading Counts test on a book they never thought they could even finish was the best part of this whole grant. And while we weren’t able to hold the final Reading Carnival of the year, I did notice that students were on track to have the highest number of Reading Counts points earned all year! As a school, we have doubled our Reading Count points compared to last year, so thank you for the motivation!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to support our students in developing a lifelong love for reading and developing reading habits that promote reading for enjoyment, choice, and interest. Research shows that students engaged in reading texts that they enjoy will apply more effort, display more stamina, and engage in more decoding strategies when given choice in reading material and motivation to read. The goal is to enhance our student’s independent reading of books through hosting three annual Reading Counts Carnivals to incentivize individual independent reading.

What will be done with my students

Throughout the year, students take part in independent reading using our school media center on campus. When completing a book, students are able to earn points through the Reading Counts Platform online. The school will host three Carnivals per year, for each grade level for a 30-minute time block. Before each carnival, students will be able to earn tickets to the carnival based upon their points accumulated through Reading Counts. Our younger students will earn tickets for learning their letters, sounds, and sight words as emerging readers. At the carnival, students may spend their tickets on different small games as a school wide event that celebrates student success and improvement in reading, participation in reading for enjoyment, and the development of a passion for reading.

Benefits to my students

Reading for enjoyment and engaging in reading allows students to develop and broaden their vocabulary, and understand the world around them. Encouraging independent reading empowers students and fosters them to continue to apply reading strategies to build their comprehension. Students will work harder and put forth more effort when they are allowed to make their own decisions when choosing reading materials. Celebrating students’ independent reading in elementary school helps to increase student language acquisition, vocabulary development, and set students up for future academic success. Engaging in a building-wide culture that celebrates and values a love of reading will influence individual students through social events and celebrations as well.

Budget Narrative

The budget includes multiple games and activities that can be set up at different stations for students to play for the three carnivals that will be held throughout the year. The different games appeal to students ages 6-11, and often can be played by multiple students. The games selected were chosen based on their ability to be used long-term for multiple years to guarantee the sustainability of the building-wide literacy celebration days. Minimal decorations were also included to provide a carnival theme for the students’ special day at Village Oaks Elementary School.
