Suncoast Credit Union

My goal is to incorporate STEM activities through the use of coding and robotics. It is not enough for my students to learn to code but is imperative that they also understand coding and what it means to write code as well as understand how coding works. With schools falling behind in Math and Science education and companies unable to find enough qualified professionals to fill jobs in science and technology, it is more important than ever to incorporate STEM focused education to help students develop the abilities they need for a technology-driven world.Studies show 65% of kids entering primary school today will work in jobs that do NOT exist yet, and there will be 4.4 million computer and IT jobs in the USA by 2024. That is why pushing STEM in my 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes are more important than ever. This a continuation of the grant proposal from last year, but adding 4th and 5th grades as well. 3rd graders from last year will be the facilitators as they teach new students the knowledge that they have learned.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 390

This grant is so amazing because it is an extension from last year where my 3rd grade kids went absolutely crazy about KOOV so I knew I  needed to expand this to grades 4 and 5!  It was incredible because I had my 3rd graders from last year become the teachers as they help to guide their older peers.  That experience was a tremendous success!!  I wish that I had video taped it. The discussion and communication was astounding to watch.  We were really beginning to get into it with grades 4 and 5 before Spring Break and I was excited to see all the amazing results, discussions and interactions that I know was going to take place.  I can't wait to share the outcome more when we return to school.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

3rd,4th and 5th grade students will be introduced to a new and exciting program called KOOV. KOOV is the all-in-one coding robotics and design kit that combines digital coding with physical building to teach students to become problem-solvers and innovators. KOOV comes with hundreds of colorful blocks that students will be able to build and connect to create different kinds of robots. Motors, sensors, and lights attach to the blocks and connect to a processing unit that helps students create unique robots. Students will progress through the Learning Course that contains a wide set of hands-on lessons that teach the students how to build and code in a fun way that is simple and a lot of fun. My last year's 3rd graders will serve as technology trainers for the new students. This is a continuation of our KOOV experience from last year! The results were so incredible that each grade level 3-5 MUST have the opportunity to use KOOV and learn how this innovative program works. The 2nd lesson "Make a LED light up shows students how to program a light turn on and off and composing a simple program. At the end of each lesson the app asks a multiple-choice question based on the content to help students review the lesson learned. Each lesson takes the students through the steps needed to put the blocks together and connect the wires with simple animation that provides all the code needed to control the robot, by simply hitting the SEND button on the iPad the program will be uploaded so the students can see their robots come to life. The first step is for students use 3D blocks to build complex robots. Because they are able to manipulate the blocks, they can visualize and design from multiple angles and understand each connection. The second step is to code. Students will use the iPad to access the KOOV Platform. The KOOV courses engage students as they direct them to go beyond building by turning their ideas into movement! The KOOV application allows students to move step by step as they make their robots come to life with movement, sounds, and lights by using LEDS, buzzers, sensors, and motors. Educational content progresses them from basic components of engineering and coding to programming logic, structure, and processes. After students design, connect, and code, they are able to test their creation by plugging it in to discover if they're robots begin to MOVE!

Benefits to my students

My students at Lake Trafford are bright, wonderful, creative and inquisitive 3rd graders, but what makes them unique is that they are either 1st or 2nd generation Americans that come to school lacking the background knowledge that most of their counterparts already have. It is imperative that they have access to STEM activities and the opportunities this technology can bring to bridge the academic achievement gap. The benefits to having KOOV for STEM is to inspire creativity and hands-on learning that engage content in an interactive way. Collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving as well as access to STEM activities, and learning to code, and build their own robots and becoming innovators while helping to become global learners ready to meet the challenge of STEM and coding so that they can compete globally.

The continuation of this grant will benefit MORE students this year so that there will be a greater impact. The kits last year will still be utilized BUT I found out VERY quickly that more were needed to provide the BEST learning opportunities for my students. Each kit really can be only used successfully with no more than 3 students, so my students last year had to wait sometimes 2 weeks to access the kits which did not make them very happy because of student engagement this program provided.

Budget Narrative

The 3 kits will supplement the 3 kits from last year so that more students will have the opportunity to learn with is exciting program.
I realize that the District requires Wi-Fi Security for each iPad and I will be asking PTO to pay for the cost.
