Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 119

This project was called STEM corner.  It was designed to enhance the education of advanced and gifted learners.  I have 119 students that utilized the STEM activities.  I would have liked to have been able to share it in class and use all the materials that were ordered but due to the safer at home order that was not possible.  I did utilize the distance learning activities.  Many of the distance STEM learning activities could be done with materials found at home.  I only had to mail out materials to 6 of my students that said that they did not have the required materials.  These activities gave the students a welcome break from their quarantine.  They could work in teams over the conference function in Teams and Canvas to help get ideas and share their projects.  Students had to use problem solving skills to design and build specific structures to carry out a specific task.  They had to use their own knowledge but could also use parents and siblings as resources thus making it a family engagement activity.  I think they had a lot of fun and relieved some of their quarantine boredom and stress.

I was unable to take pictures since we are still using distance learning.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have a corner of my room dedicated to STEM activities.

What will be done with my students

Students will have opportunities to do hands-on activities that will allow students to be creative, think inventively, solve problems with constraints; create, plan an build designs that they can then test out using the provided materials. Students will use the manipulative and open-ended STEM challenge cards to improve and enhance their structures and then write about them.

Benefits to my students

STEM education teaches students that each subject is important and useful in every day life. It provides a launching pad to develop an early interest in engineering, math and science as an impetus to higher education and highly-skilled careers.
