Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 400

Writing is a challenge for some and a passion for others. The Toucan Times reporters have a passion for writing. They wrote articles abaout a wide variety of topics and often times they would work at home after school, during the weekend and during vacations. Reporters wrote about school events, science investigations, social emotional topics, and a host of other engaging topics. Students generated ideas for each issue of the Toucan Times and also worked together to revise and edit each article.  The level of independence and ownership was incredible.

When each issue was completed, the Toucan Times reporters even delivered the newspaper to classrooms.

The impact our school newspaper had on all students in third through fifth grade was almost as astounding as the impact it had on the Toucan Times staff. Students loved reading about school events and solving the word puzzles and riddles. They wanted more issues and more stories. I have no doubt that we will continue to publish the Toucan Times  in the future.

Our school is working to teach our students the value of Leader in Me practices. Through their involvement in the Toucan Times school newspaper, students demonstrated the habit of being proactive, putting first things first, beginning with the end in mind and most importantly they found their voice!

We are so grateful for the generosity and kindness that allowed this amazing opportunity.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide students at Golden Terrace Elementary, a Title 1 school, with an opportunity to write and publish a monthly school newspaper, The Toucan Times.

What will be done with my students

Students will be engaging in all of the aspects of journalism. They will brainstorm topics, interview students and staff, conduct research, and take their writing piece through the writing process. The process includes planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. With guidance from teacher volunteers, students will be actively engaged in problem solving, decision making and collaboration with their peers.

Benefits to my students

Students will gain real world experience in creating a newspaper. They will develop their writing skills and discover another purpose for writing.
Due to the fact that students are given control of much of the decision making, they will develop a sense of ownership and accomplishment that will invariably increase their sense of self worth.
