To incorporate STEM activities through the use of coding and robotics using an innovating and exciting program called Root which is an incredibly powerful tool for learning which scales the users' abilities from so simple that even a 4 year old can begin coding and using simple pictures and symbols to mastering graphical coding, to full text coding. Studies show that 65% of students entering primary school do not have the necessary skills needed to fill the technology and IT jobs in the year 2024. We need to start NOW with STEM in K-5 STEM focused education with programs like ROOT, No longer is STEM a luxury, but STEM is imperative!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 700

We recieved this grant late January and were estactic!   We have NOT completed this grant unfortunately because of not being able to attend classes after Spring Break.   A few kids were able to explore only a few parts of the Root Robots and LOVED it.  I saw exciitement and interaction with 3-5 that was so cool and they were hoping to explore and learn more after we came back from Spring Break which was our dedicated STEM module time for this grant.  I can't wait until we return to school so they can get back to learning and exploring with Root Robotics.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To incorporate STEM activities through the use of coding and robotics using an innovating and exciting program called Root which is an incredibly powerful tool for learning which scales the users' abilities from so simple that even a 4 year old can begin coding and using simple pictures and symbols to mastering graphical coding, to full text coding. Studies show that 65% of students entering primary school do not have the necessary skills needed to fill the technology and IT jobs in the year 2024. We need to start NOW with STEM in K-5 STEM focused education with programs like ROOT, No longer is STEM a luxury, but STEM is imperative!

What will be done with my students

All students will be introduced to ROOT. Root is a fun and easy to use educational coding problem-solving skills, it is a coding robot that works on a two-wheeled, mobile platform. it uses three levels of coding languages, from simple graphical blocks for younger children to full text for more advanced users.Root Square’s Level 1 interface is designed to be accessible to kids as young as 4, and for novices of any age who have never experienced coding before. There are a deliberately limited number of blocks, no words, and no numbers greater than twenty. This means that kids can start coding even before they learn how to read, For more advanced users, and for beginners who are ready to go beyond Level 1’s limits, Root Square provides a powerful instruction set in its Level 2 graphical programming language. Level 2 introduces variables, sensor values, units, flow control statements, arithmetic operations, recursion, and parallelism. Both Level 1 and 2 are accessed from the same app, and previously written Level 1 code can be automatically converted to Level 2 to ease the transition.Programs created with Level 1 and Level 2 can also be converted into Python, JavaScript, or Swift code (Level 3).

Benefits to my students

1. problem-solving
2. innovation
3. interactive learning
4. cooperative learning
5. decision making
6. increased motivation
7. active engagement
8.STEM learning
9. Hands on learning

Budget Narrative

The 6 pack Root robots are $1129,99 plus $100,00 for tax and shipping. the white magnetic dry erase boards are used for the root robots and also include $100.00 for shipping and taxes. The robots run on iPads or mobile devices but I am not requesting iPads because I can use what I have.
