My goal is to provide my special needs students an opportunity to be exposed to current events by using Scholastic News, a current event magazine for kids. This would include Scholastic News, Science Spin and an interactive edition, perfect for our interactive whiteboard, classroom computers/ IPads and features a video, learning game, a read aloud option and much more. Scholastic News and Science Spin will be used to enhance and support the Modified Unique Curriculum that students are engaged in daily.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 16

My students love Scholastic News! It has been a great addition to our reading and science curriculum. The students love the interactive magazine, videos, games and worksheets.

My goal was to provide my special needs students an opportunity to be exposed to current events by using Scholastic News, a current event magazine for kids. This included Scholastic News, Science Spin and an interactive edition, perfect for our interactive whiteboard, classroom computers/ IPads and featured a video, learning game, a read aloud option and much more. Scholastic News and Science Spin was used to enhance and support the Modified Unique Curriculum that students are engaged in daily.

My special-needs student had their own copy of Scholastic News/Science Spin beginning in Sept. 2019- May 2020. Students had their own Scholastic Folder where they kept each monthly copy. Each monthly addition was used in guided reading groups and throughout a variety of science lessons. The final goal was for students to develop and present their own classroom science project to share with their peers at the end of May. Due to Covid-19, that is not able to happen. The students are still engaged with Scholastic on Canvas with a weekly story to access.

The benefit to having this current event magazine available for my students was very unique and motivating. Many of my students do not have access to any news source. They are not aware of many of the current events that happen throughout the country/world. All of my students benefited from Scholastic.

We also had a unique opportunity to interact with general education 5th graders in my classroom. Many times we had these students leading a scholastic center and learning along side the special needs students. It was so fulfilling to observe.
