Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

The student friendly furniture added for an updated seating area for our students in our library.  The space is utilized as a "treat" for students as they sit and read, study or play a board game with friends.   The addition of this furniture, no doubt, added some excitement to the library.   Added elements included decorative pillows as well as a table that can be used as a workspace.   Students feel a sense of pride when using the space and often dread when it is time to go.  Other teachers have used it as a space exclusive for their "Reader Leaders" and their invited guests.   Incidentally, once delivered, the furniture was assembled by our Student Media Center Support Team which works throughout the year to keep our library tidy, updated and inviting.  The photos will show the finished seating area as well as students putting it together.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide students with a comfortable, updated and inviting area in our Media Center where they can read independently, study stress-free and work collaboratively.

What will be done with my students

The current VIP lounge in our library serves as a space where our most proficient readers visit to practice and enhance their reading skills. This elite area is one that students take pride in being able to come into, because VIP members have illustrated accomplishments in reading and a genuine love of literature. Updating this space with newer and more modern furniture will aid in motivating additional students to set goals of achieving VIP membership.

Benefits to my students

Libraries create important learning environments. They help learners develop academic, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. They borrow concepts from various non-academic environments so as to create a place where learners can do research, interact, and collaborate. Using more modernized furniture to enhance the space will build pride in students who utilize it and help to inspire those who aspire to enjoy it. Furniture does not only reconfigure spaces inside the library but also helps in modernizing the culture of the library, providing all users with a comfortable space that invites self-directed learning and interaction.

Budget Narrative

Cost will replace current furniture and is expected to serve its purpose for a minimum of 5 years.
