Ms. Kemmerer will visit the school and speak to our students as well as signing their personal copies. This will extend our whole school reading project and allow students to learn more about the writing process, as well as more background on the book they have been reading together.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 600

Due to Covid-19, our in-person author visit with Brigid Kemmerer had to be postponed until September of 2020.  However, Brigid was gracious enough to do a virtual author visit in early May, free of charge!  She will still plan to visit us in September.  This narrative covers up to the virtual visit.

 

Lorenzo Walker Technical High School is a Title I public school, where our students become dually enrolled in a technical program at Lorenzo Walker Technical College in their junior and senior years of high school.  Besides the academic reasons, students choose to attend LWTHS because they have heard and experienced that this is a school where they will all be included and that feels very much like family.  However, even in our tight-knit community, students tend to form cliques and it can become difficult for students to reach out beyond their own group.  With such a wide range of technical programs from which to choose, it is easy to form stereotypes based on perceived differences.   

 

The Whole School Read program at Lorenzo Walker Technical High School focuses on relationship and community-building, as well as Social Emotional Learning, through reading and discussing a common book campus-wide.  Our chosen book is Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer, whose main characters come from very different backgrounds but overcome their stereotypes of each other to become friends, dealing with grief and emotional turmoil together.  We knew that the themes of overcoming stereotypes and dealing with grief were themes that anyone can relate to and would bring our small school community even closer together.  

 

Students have done a letter-writing project across grade levels to kick off the Whole School Read are now reading Letters to the Lost.  Not only are students’ literacy skills being enhanced through high-interest fiction and discussions, but students are talking about difficult life experiences like loss, depression, and dealing with grief.  They are making new friends and connections and many have remarked on the impact this experience has had on their perception of others and their feeling of connection at the school. 


Finally, the year ended with our virtual author visit.  Prior to the virtual author visit, Language Arts teachers gathered student questions and send them to Vanessa Alvarez, the media specialist.  Ms. Alvarez sorted through and picked ten questions to ask the author.  All students were invited to the virtual visit, and students who had their questions picked were notified about this as well.  During the virtual visit, Vanessa Alvarez and Lianne Elliott, Reading Coach, hosted the meeting.  They introduced Brigid Kemmerer who chatted with staff and students about our new virtual learning environment.  We then asked her the student questions, naming the students as we went so as to recognize them.  Brigid was gracious in answering all of our questions.  The meeting was also recorded to be shared with anyone who could not make the meeting.

 

From this whole school (whole year!) project, we found that not only has school climate improved, but our media center’s circulation has improved drastically, up 60% from this time last year.  Students from all skill levels are interested in reading the follow-up to the book, Letters to the Lost, and they are also seeking out similar books after this one got their interest. 


The Whole School Read will continue to be a driving force in giving our students an opportunity to connect with each other and feeling connected to the adults at the school.  No matter the book choice, activities will center around the common reading experience and the discussions that stem from the themes.

This will extend our whole school reading project and allow students to learn more about the writing process, as well as more background on the book they have been reading together. 

 

What will be done with my students

LWTHS students will be reading Letters to the Lost during the first half of the school year. They will also participate in whole-school activities that help build community over the common reading such as letter-writing, small and large-group discussions, and community service projects based on the book's themes. The culminating activity will be for the whole school to meet the author, learning more about her writing process, the inspiration behind the book, and more about what it is like to be an author. Students will also have the opportunity to have their personal copy of the book signed by the author. 

 

Benefits to my students

By meeting Brigid Kemmerer, LWTHS students will develop a more personal relationship to the book, Letters to the Lost, as well as build community amongst themselves as they all read a common book. Students will not only address literature standards, but they will work on social emotional learning, both parts of our School Improvement Plan. 

 

Budget Narrative

$1500 includes the author's fee for a day's visit, as well as her travel expenses, put into one flat fee.
