Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 225

The addition of this technology to my classroom has had a positive impact on all of my classes.  I have the ability to call up professional recordings and play them instantly, providing students with sound models to emulate.  I am able to project images from the musical score so students can see how their individual parts impact the whole composition.

One major benefit of this technology is the ability for it to act as a piano accompanist for students and give them the ability to perform solos.  One student this year was performing an advanced clarinet solo with a challenging piano accompaniment.  I was not able to find an accompanist for her that could tackle it.  We were able to find a digital accompaniment and she performed her solo at the FBA Solo and Ensemble Festival and earned a Superior rating using this iPad and bluetooth device.

We are also able to use this to play instructional games that require students to play their instruments at various dynamic levels.  We have a lot of fun projecting the game and having tournaments.  It is great fun but we are also learning to play with sensitivity and characteristic tone.   Students have also used this device to record themselves playing for assessments. This allows me to continue teaching while certain students are performing assessments and I am able to grade it later and provide more meaningful feedback rather than a comment or two in passing.

Having this technology at my fingertips has allowed me to spend a lot more time teaching in front of my students, and less time at my computer searching for recordings or dealing with other tasks that remove me from the podium.   Thank you so much for your investment in music at Golden Gate Middle and throughout Collier County!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To obtain an iPad pro for use in large group instruction as well as individual assessment of students.

What will be done with my students

Students will have the opportunity to use this technology to record themselves in performance and assessment. They can use the audio and video to analyze and critique their performance and develop ways to improve. They can also use the device to access programs like "Flipgrid" as a way to record and turn in performance based assessments.

This device can also be used by the teacher in conjunction with technology currently in place to project the screen of the device so the whole class can view it. Students will be able to see digital tuners, metronomes, and musical examples displayed on the projector as well as images that will help them visualize the music they are preparing. Use of the Apple pencil will allow the instructor to write on the screen of the device and students will be able to see and copy those markings in their own music.

Benefits to my students

This device will help students take command of their learning. Students will be able to turn in assessments digitally after they feel they have recorded their best effort. This device will also lessen the time that the instructor is changing over from one strategy to another (tuner to metronome, or displaying different images) as it will all be available in one device as opposed to several separate ones. Being able to record assessments will allow me to use more class time teaching new material, and less time on individual assessment. With large classes, assessment can be a long process. This device will allow more time for making music!
