My goal is to incorporate STEM activities through the use of coding and robotics. It is not enough for my students to learn to code but is imperative that they also understand coding and what it means to write code as well as understand how coding works. With schools falling behind in Math and Science education and companies unable to find enough qualified professionals to fill jobs in science and technology, it is more important than ever to incorporate STEM focused education to help students develop the abilities they need for a technology-driven world.Studies show 65% of kids entering primary school today will work in jobs that do NOT exist yet, and there will be 4.4 million computer and IT jobs in the USA by 2024. That is why pushing STEM in my 3rd grade classes are more important than ever.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 165

The outcome of this exciting and innovating program has been incredible! The students have been more engaged than I have ever seen in a really long time. Not only that, my students developed communication skills as they learned how to problem solve, use their critical thinking skills to understand the tasks of coding. I was merely the facilitator in all of this. As the students progressed through the Learning Courses they gained more confidence in their ability to take risks and learn from their mistakes which enabled them not only build but also create their own robots and thus become innovators.  I must also add, we did not have a single behavior issue because the engagement and motivation was extremely high!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Students will be introduced to a new and exciting program called KOOV. KOOV is the all-in-one coding robotics and design kit that combines digital coding with physical building to teach students to become problem-solvers and innovators. KOOV comes with hundreds of colorful blocks that students will be able to build and connect to create different kinds of robots. Motors, sensors, and lights attach to the blocks and connect to a processing unit that helps students create unique robots. Students will progress through the Learning Course that contains a wide set of hands-on lessons that teach the students how to build and code in a fun way that is simple and a lot of fun. The 2nd lesson "Make a LED light up shows students how to program a light turn on and off and composing a simple program. At the end of each lesson the app asks a multiple-choice question based on the content to help students review the lesson learned. Each lesson takes the students through the steps needed to put the blocks together and connect the wires with simple animation that provides all the code needed to control the robot, by simply hitting the SEND button on the iPad the program will be uploaded so the students can see their robots come to life.

Benefits to my students

My students at Lake Trafford are bright, wonderful, creative and inquisitive 3rd graders, but what makes them unique is that they are either 1st or 2nd generation Americans that come to school lacking the background knowledge that most of their counterparts already have. It is imperative that they have access to STEM activities and the opportunities this technology can bring to bridge the academic achievement gap. The benefits to having KOOV for STEM is to inspire creativity and hands-on learning that engage content in an interactive way. Collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving as well as access to STEM activities, and learning to code, and build their own robots and becoming innovators while helping to become global learners ready to meet the challenge of STEM and coding so that they can compete globally.

Budget Narrative

The KOOV program kits are for 6 (160) 3rd grade classes.
The iPads are needed to upload the programs to enable their robots come to life.
