Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 250

Thank you so much for the calculators that I have been able to use for students in my classroom as well as for the National Math Honor Society at competitions and at practice.  These will continue to be used for many years to come.  The cost of registration and photocopying/printing reduced the out-of-pocket cost for our students so that they could compete and represent our school and our county.  We have won trophies for our Statistics team as well as individual trophies in both Calculus and Statistics this year. We look forward to our culmiating event at the Florida State Championships in April and are grateful for the resources provided to support our team.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To increase success of our highest achieving math students by challenging them with local, regional and state mathematics competitions, as well as developing problem solving skills that will enrich and extend them in mathematics and science classrooms and prepare them for college and career opportunities..

What will be done with my students

We attend four regional competitions and one state competition each year. We are asking for financial support for registration fees for ONE competition.

Graphing Calculators will allow students to do complex mathematics problems with expensive equipment. ($150/each) These calculators provide algebraic capability to symbolically solve equations, factor and expand variable expressions, complete the square, find anti-derivatives, computer limits and exact solutions in irrational forms.

Benefits to my students

1. Raise profile of Math Honor Society at Palmetto Ridge HS
2. Develop complexity in math knowledge and problem solving ability both for Mu Alpha Theta team (National Math Honor Society) and in classrooms
3. Support camaraderie of highly successful STEM students and enrich their opportunities
4. Use Math Honor Society students to mentor other students at PRHS (and possibly local elementary and middle schools) in mathematics
