Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 175

Students in 5th grade used fractions to help develop their understanding for fractions! When I originally wrote the grant, I was hoping to use the LEGO's in all grade levels but 5th graders really needed the development this year. In future years, grades in 3-5 will use the LEGO's to help learn and understand about fractions.

The LEGO's allowed our 5th graders to understand the different sizes of fractions, what equivalent fractions look like, and what happens as you multiply a whole times a fraction. These concepts are very abstract and difficult for our students, and hte LEGO's provided a great visual for students. They were able to build there background knowledge and actually see the meaning behind the math they were doing! Thank you so much for providing these kids with this great opportunity!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students in grades 3-5 will have an in-depth understanding of the meaning of fractions by engaging in hands-on experiences with LEGOs.

What will be done with my students

Students will use legos to understanding the meaning of one whole, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 to start. They will build a model to see the different sizes and compare 1/2 of a lego to 1/2 of a piece of paper to understand that the size of a whole makes a huge difference. Students will engage in LEGO challenges that involve building items of different sizes and discussing their size by using fractions.

Benefits to my students

Students consistently struggle to understand that fractions reduce the amount of something. They need a strong foundational understanding of the size of fractions so they can understand harder concepts such as multiplying and dividing fractions. LEGOs are highly engaging and will provide an experience with fractions that students will allow students to connect back to as their learning progresses.

Budget Narrative

This will buy 9 LEGO kits which will allow every teacher in a grade level to have a set during their fraction unit.
