My goal is to have all my students actively engaged while exploring the scientific method in an innovative way. The students will put on their individual lab coats and goggles when appropriate to work with a partner to raise questions, solve problems and form their explanations while looking and feeling like a scientist.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

My students and the other second grade students just love putting on their lab coats and thinking  like a scientist.    For some reason going the extra mile and dressing the part changes the mindset of some of the students and just challenges them to be the very best they can be.  They enjoy putting on the goggles and pouring the water and measuring.  They are Responsible, Innovative, Confident, Engaged and Reflective.  Thank you for giving and believing in us and our future!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have all my students actively engaged while exploring the scientific method in an innovative way. The students will put on their individual lab coats and goggles when appropriate to work with a partner to raise questions, solve problems and form their explanations while looking and feeling like a scientist.

What will be done with my students

While meeting science benchmarks and standards, the students will be able to put on their own lab coat and think like a scientist and look like one too. Throughout the curriculum students are expected to think like a scientist and explain how scientists (alone or in groups) are always investigating new ways to solve problems. The students will make investigations in teams through free exploration and systematic observations, and generate appropriate explanations based on their findings. They can compare data collected by others and
repeat their investigations. Each time we do a science investigation, the students will put on their science lab coat. There will be times when the students would benefit from wearing goggles to protect their eyes from anything that may "splatter".

Benefits to my students

By actually putting on a lab coat, each student can look and feel like a scientist. This can motivate the student who is not feeling confident in this area as well as encourage and put a smile on the student who loves to dress up and wants to be a scientist. It will increase the self esteem just enough to encourage them to make a hypothesis. Therefore by the end, they will be able to tell the difference between observations and inferences and meet all the goals in science. The lab coats will benefit all the students from the beginning of the year to the end of the year each week we do a science investigation and/or a steam activity.
These will also be used for future students as well. I am willing to share the lab coats and goggles with my teammates--expanding the number of students this will impact.

Budget Narrative

The lab coats and goggles were priced at the most economic vendors that offered discounts if bought by a certain date and availability. It is possible that a slightly lower price or discount could be given. If the difference was significant, another lab coat would be ordered or extra goggles to allow for breakage so all money would be spent.
